First-Year Experience Advisory Committee
The First-Year Experience is a broad and inclusive phrase intended to encompass
the range of both traditional acculturation activities (such as those offered by
admissions, orientation, advising, residential life, and wellness) with extracurricular
programming and academic coursework (such as speaker series, common readings,
first-year seminars, and liberal education requirements and electives). The goal of
the First-Year Experience is to welcome WSU students to “a community of
learners improving our world” by providing them a successful transition to, and
experience in, their first year of college.
A. Committee Charge:
1. To research, review, coordinate, and initiate policies and programming
designed to improve the quality of the First-Year Experience for WSU
students.
2. To review assessment data pertinent to the First-Year Experience.
3. To make (and receive) recommendations and/or suggestions regarding specific
elements of the First-Year Experience to Faculty Association; Academic Affairs
and Curriculum Committee; departments, programs, and units; and/or other
constituencies as appropriate.
B. Committee will elect a co-chair.
C. There is no formula for term of office, but members are encouraged to serve for
more than one year.
D. Faculty co-chairperson will call the first meeting and establish a regular schedule.
E. Composition: 8 IFO (including each College plus representatives from Library;
Counseling Center; Residential College; Orientation (Co-) Coordinator(s);
and Rochester), 4 ASF (including Admissions, Advising, and
Residential Life), 1 MAPE, 1 AFSCME, 1 Dean, and 2-3 Students.
