Jazz is one of the few truly American artistic traditions - one that simultaneously celebrates individuality and ingenuity in expression, yet encourages us to learn from and emulate the jazz greats of the past. From Louis Armstrong to Louis Bellson, jazz has transcended the boundaries of culture, race, and economics to form deep connections between performers and connoisseurs at all levels.

The Winona State University Jazz Program is a learning community dedicated to the education, performance and appreciation of jazz. Like improvisation, one of the genre's most unique attributes, an education in jazz fosters creativity, skill development and critical thinking. Through several courses, ensembles, and performance opportunities, the jazz program at WSU promotes the growth and development of student musicians, and elevates awareness of jazz within the community.

The WSU Jazz Program is part of a comprehensive Department of Music that features a variety of undergraduate degree options for music majors and minors, and numerous performance opportunites for students of all disciplines.
