John Paulson brings over 30 years of teaching experience at the college level to the WSU Jazz Program. As professor of music at Saint Mary’s University (SMU) he served as director of the jazz studies and music industry programs. Dr. Paulson earned his B.M. and Master of Music degrees from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and his D.M.A. in music education from the University of Washington in Seattle. Paulson’s jazz quartet has performed on the Minnesota Public Radio Morning Show broadcast live from the Sheldon Theater in Red Wing, MN. He has also performed throughout the Midwest with his own groups and toured internationally with jazz groups from SMU.
As a free-lance artist Dr. Paulson has performed with the Pioneer Memorial Theatre and Repertory Dance Theater in Salt Lake City, and has appeared with the Temptations, Mel Torme, Andy Williams and Johnny Mathis, among others here in the midwest. In the last 15 years, he has written, recorded and produced four commercial jazz CD’s, along with five Masterclass CD’s for the Saxophone Journal.
