What criteria are scholarship recipients based on?
Will I be notified if I didn't receive a scholarship?
Due to the overwhelming response, we may not be able to notify applicants that did not receive a scholarship. You may check with your department for further details. We will publish a list of recipients on this webpage, sometime this summer. If I receive a scholarship how does the money get paid out?Your scholarship funds will be sent to the WSU Financial Aid Office. They will then be responsible for disbursement to the student. For more information please contact the Financial Aid Office: Phone - 507.457.2800 Email - financialaid@winona.edu What can my scholarship dollars be used for?Scholarship money can be utilized to assist with the cost of Tuition, Room, Board, and/or Books. Do I have to be currently enrolled to apply?Yes; Unless you have an ACT score of at least 28 and were in the Top 5 % of your graduating class. Can I receive more than one scholarship?Yes; it is typically a good idea to apply for as many as you are eligible for. Do you have scholarships for the average students?Yes; there are many scenarios available to all students. For instance you may not be academically in great standing, however you may qualify on a Financial Need basis. Do I need to complete a new application each year?Yes; you must apply every year by the given deadline to be eligible on a yearly basis. Do I apply for scholarships through my major too?Yes; you can fill out two separate applications:
Am I considered for departmental scholarships using just the General Application?No, not at this time. Currently each department has separate scholarship applications. Be sure to apply for both the WSU General Scholarship as well as your departmental scholarship(s). Does my scholarship affect my financial aid reward?In some cases Yes. Often times a scholarship will reduce your student loan amounts. To verify the effect a scholarship can have on your Financial Aid, please contact the Financial Aid Office: Phone - 507.457.2800 Email - financialaid@winona.edu What if my GPA falls below the required GPA?If your scholarship requires you to meet a certain GPA expectation, you must maintain at least the required GPA to keep your scholarship. If your GPA moves below the required level, you will lose your scholarship. What if I don't have any financial need?Not all scholarships are based on financial need; It is still recommended that you apply. For instance, a student may not have a financial need, however does meet academic requirements of a scholarship. How many 'Thank You' notes will I write?You will be required to submit two 'Thank You' notes:
Why is it important to apply with the required essay?You will not be considered for a scholarship if you do not submit the required essay and/or other required documentation. Your chances of being awarded a scholarship increase by completing an essay, provided you meet all other criteria of the scholarship. Are there scholarships for part-time students?Most scholarships require students to be full-time (at least 12 credit hours). However, there are a few scholarships available for part-time students. It is recommended to apply regardless of full-time/part-time status. Are foreign students eligible for scholarship awards?Yes; if the international student will be attending Winona State University then they will be eligible. Anytime we handle personal or sensitive information, it is strictly confidential. Difference between current and permanent address?Your current address is where you live while attending Winona State University. Your permanent address is your home address (Parent's address in many cases). Why is my parent's address and info required?Your parents will be invited to a scholarship recognition event in the fall of your academic year. Your parents information is utilized to mail the invitation. Is there any way that a parent can get information?Yes; if you are under the age of 18 or you as the student grant them permission to your information. |
