Global Studies Career Opportunities

Most Global Studies majors intend to pursue international careers.  An international job is a position that requires employees to conduct their work across national borders, or deal with global/international issues.  An international job can be a short-term job, or it can be a full-time career position.  It might be based in the US or overseas.  Almost any vocation can be “internationalized”—from accounting to zoo keeping.  It all depends on training, language, and cultural skills, and experience.

Positions most readily available to new graduates without specialized training are with non-profits such as the federal government (Peace Corps, Foreign Service), international service agencies (CARE, UNICEF, Direct Relief International), and English-language teaching jobs.  Most international business or technical companies require that you have the same skills and knowledge necessary for jobs in the US.  The best way to obtain this type of job abroad is to work for a US company (such as a bank, consulting firm, or engineering firm) that does business internationally and gain an international job through a promotion or experience.  It’s important to note that employers often consider actual work experience as a proxy for a specialized undergraduate degree.  As on recruiter put it, “What does a B.A. in business mean to us if the person has never worked in the real world?”  (From University of California, Santa Barbara Admissions and Outreach Services. http://www.admit.ucsb.edu/Majors-pdf/GlobalStudies.pdf)

Traditional paths to overseas career opportunities include earning an advanced degree (e.g., Law, Business, and International Affairs) and/or working your way up within an organization and positioning yourself for an international assignment. International Internships Are A Must for Survival in the Global Economy
(ARA) -- The concept of a global economy is no longer just a concept. It's a fact! Businesses large and small, profit and nonprofit, are stretching across time zones to international venues. As a result, college students and business entrepreneurs are quickly realizing they must keep pace with the global marketplace. Internships that just a couple years ago placed college students inside corporate skyscrapers in American cities are now placing American interns in such international locales as Tokyo and Hong Kong.  Two professors at Northwestern College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, teamed up to launch an International Business major five years ago that places students in six-month internships with businesses in Japan. Charles Kuivinen, professor of Business and chair of the business department, spent 25 years with such enterprises as Ford Motor Company, Purex and 12 years in his own financial consulting/human resource enterprise. Russ Lunak, assistant professor of Bible and Business Administration, spent 17 years in Japan as a missionary, a Christian education consultant and director of the Japan Missionary Language Institute.
