Internship Opportunities

 

The following internships have been awarded. Please look under News and Announcements for more information.


The Global Studies Program announces the availability of five internships during this summer (2009). These internships are available only to global studies majors who have at least a Junior standing at the university and plan to return to WSU after the completion of the internship to complete their degree requirements.

There are two internships in Shanghai, China with the Shanghai Industries Group for six weeks beginning early July. The following factors will be taken into account will selecting candidates who must appear for an interview with the program faculty

  • Familiarity with the Chinese language evidenced by courses taken
  • Familiarity with Chinese culture evidenced by taking courses pertaining to Chinese culture and/or study abroad experience in a Chinese speaking region
  • Letter from employer attesting reliability and responsibility

 There is one internship with the Japan-America Society of Minnesota(JASM) in Minneapolis. The following factors will be taken into account will selecting a candidate for this internship,

  • Familiarity with the Japanese language evidenced by courses taken
  • Familiarity with Japanese culture evidenced by taking courses pertaining to Japanese culture and/or study abroad experience in a Japan
  • Letter from employer attesting reliability and responsibility

 

City of Winona

There is a strong likelihood of two internships with the City of Winona. Their preference is for one student who is native Japanese speaker and one who is a native English speaker but is familiar with the Japanese language. The following factors will be taken into account while selecting candidates for these internships.

  • Familiarity with the Japanese language evidenced by courses taken
  • Familiarity with Japanese culture evidenced by taking courses pertaining to Japanese culture and/or study abroad experience in a Japan
  • Letter from employer attesting reliability and responsibility
  • The native Japanese speaking student should ideally be a global studies major and provide evidence of having worked in a position of responsibility.

 

Financial Support

Candidates selected for the internship in Shanghai will receive $1000 each toward airfare. They will also have a place to stay that will be free of cost and some meals will be provided.

Candidates selected for internship with JASM in Minneapolis will receive $500 stipend toward costs incurred for purposes of this internship.

Students selected for internships in Winona will receive $250 each towards expenses pertaining to the internship.

Please send your applications with a formal letter of application that must specify the goals you wish to achieve by doing this internship, and other supporting evidence. These applications must be sent to Michelle Huling Halverson in MI 120. The deadline for applications is February 20.
