Graduation Party
The Global Studies Program and the Global Studies Students Association will be hosting a graduation recognition party on Friday, December 4 during 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the sun room attached to the Greenmill Restaurant in Winona. The party will include a complementry pizza buffet dinner. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. All Global Studies majors and minors, and Chinese and Japanese Studies minors are invited.

Merger
The Global Studies Program will merge with the Department of Foreign Languages and become a new academic unit with a new name. This change will go into effect in spring 2010.
Visit and Talk by Professor from Japan on Yoga Therapy
Dr. Chieko Kato, Associate Professor of Psychology, Toyo University, Tokyo, Japan will be giving an interactive lecture called Yoga Therapy: Psychological and Physiological Effects” on September 23. Please click here for more information:
Field Trip
On June 17 students from two classes- the Introduction to Global Studies and Ethnic Conflict and Nationalism went on a field trip to Minneapolis/St.Paul. They visited the Somali Center and the Center for Victims of Torture. They had lunch at the midtown Global Market and dinner at Little Mexico.
Moving Up In The World
Drs. Michael Bowler and Matthew Strecher have been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and have also been granted tenure at Winona State University. The new rank will go into effect at the beginning of Fall 2009.
In the News on National Television
Dr. Matthew Strecher was interviewed by NHK, a national television network in Japan about his views on a new book by Haruki Murakami. NHK flew out their reporter to Winona to interview Dr. Strecher. This interview will be aired in Japan on July 14 on their flagship daily program during 7:30-8:00 a.m.
Highest Honor
Katie Davenport is graduating this May with the highest gpa in Global Studies and French. Congratulations Katie.
Into the real world
Peter Singer-Towns, who is graduating in May this year with an Asian Studies Option, has a job offer which he has accepted. He will be teaching English in Taipei, Taiwan. Travis Allen, who is also graduating in May 2009 with an Asian Studies Option, has accepted a job with with the largest wholesale distributor of pool and landscaping supplies in the country. He will be posted in Fr. Lauderdale, Florida. He thinks he was hired because he can speak both Spanish and Chinese in addition to his native English. Whatever the reason, congratulations Peter and Travis! And good luck.
Internships Awarded
Austin Eschweiler and Erik Bowitz were selected for Internship in Shanghai during summer'09. Allen Lance was selected for the internship with the City of Winona and Andy Privette for the Japan America Society of Minnesota.
Faculty Research Activity
Dr. Matthew Strecher delivered two lectures during the spring break 2009. They are
Despair in the Jungle: Kaiko Takeshi's Reportage from the Vietnam War at the University of Minnesota. This lecture was a part of University of Minnesota's East Asia Seminar Series and was organized by the Consortium for the Study of the Asians.
Confessions of Haruki Murakami Addict at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia. This lecture was a part of their Annual J. Earl Moreland Lecture Series.
Dr. Weidong Zhang presented a paper entitled, Beyond the Glamour and Glory: Critical Discourse Analysis of Chinese People’s Daily Editorials on Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, at "China's Rise and Its Impact on Asia Conference," which is organized by the United Societies of China Studies at the University of Louisville, KY.
Dr. Bowler submitted a paper called Why Not Global Service-Learning? in the online journal called global-e.
Program Review
The Global Studies Program will be reviewed by an external reviewer at the end of March'09. Such a review is done every five years.
Dr. Young-gwan Lee returns home
Dr. Young-gwan Lee, Visiting Professor from Korea, has returned to his country after spending the fall semester with us.
Minor in Japanese Studies

Field Trip for learners of Chinese and Japanese language (November 4)
Drs. Strecher and Zhang led a field trip to Minneapolis and St.Paul on November 1 for students taking Chinese and Japanese language classes. They were accompanied by international students from China and Japan. The trip involved a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Museum, Japanese and Chinese restaurants, and an Asian grocery store.
Dr. Bowler attends conference
Dr. Michael Bowler attended the 37th Annual Conference on South Asia held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, October 17-19.
Dr. Strecher Presents at Berkeley
Dr. Strecher presented a paper at a symposium organized by the Center of Japanese Studies , University of California-Berkeley. The name of the symposium was The Murakami Symposium: Japanese Literature on the Global Stage held on October 12. Here is a complete listing of the panelists.

Majors form a student club (September 25)
Global Studies majors and minors formed a club called Global Studies Students Association (GSSA) and will be going before the WSU student senate for approval. Learning and teaching foreign languages (language exchange) will be a major activity of this club.
