Life Threatening Emergencies

When there is a serious injury or other clear threat to life, to obtain paramedic and ambulance assistance:

bulletCall 911
bulletBe prepared to say exactly where you are

Examples of life-threatening conditions include:

bulletDifficulty breathing
bulletMajor injury (e.g. open chest wound with trouble breathing; spinal or neck injury with loss of sensation or motion)
bulletUnconsciousness or unresponsiveness (e.g. drug or alcohol overdose)
bulletConvulsion that will not stop

Paying for Emergency visits:

Winona State University does not cover visits to the emergency room, they are billed to your insurance.

Urgent Conditions:

Although the conditions below may not be life-threatening, get a medical evaluation as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of them. When WSU Student Health Service is open, go there. Call ahead and consult with a nurse. Phone 457-5160.

Examples of Urgent Conditions:

bulletSevere pain (chest, abdomen, head, or ear), especially with fever
bulletAsthma (when not responding to usual medication)
bulletUrinary infection
bulletPossible fracture or dislocation
bulletLaceration (a cut requiring stitches)
bulletMajor bee sting reaction – hives, wheezing, or swelling (e.g. whole arm or leg swells)

What To Do:

bulletAs soon as you arrive, indicate why you think it’s urgent
bulletState the main problem first
bulletReport any past experience with the problem
bulletBring any medications you have taken for the problem
