Acute Injuries

The active daily life of the college student not uncommonly leads to injury. Health Service is equipped to evaluate injuries such as sprains, strains, bruises, cuts, insect bites, as a few examples. Crutches, ace bandages, dressings, antibiotic cream, anti-itch medications and more are also available.

Allergy Injections

People with multiple allergies (hayfever, asthma, etc.) sometimes benefit from allergy desensitization injections. Allergy injections will be given by registered nurses at the health service during MD hours.  These nurses will follow your allergist recommendations and contact him/her for further orders when necessary.  The charge is $5.00/injection.  Consent forms and additional information will be needed before this can be done.  Students are encouraged to make appointments for these injections to avoid long waits.  A waiting period of 30 minutes after the injection is mandatory.

Birth Control Medications and Counseling

Information about birth control and prescriptions and medications for birth control are available at the health service.

General Illness

Since Health Services functions as a general medical clinic, routine illness complaints are a prominent reason for student visits. Respiratory illnesses, influenza, headaches, ear aches, "pink eye", sore throats, cough, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, back pain, depression and skin rashes are just some of the many conditions we can treat here at the health service.  Facilities exist on-site to handle these and many more common complaints. Clinic staff may also assist your local physician to care for some chronic medical problems while you are a student at WSU. Such conditions as diabetes, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, immune diseases, and many others are examples.

Gynecology Exams (Pap smears and pelvic exams)

Health Service provides routine women’s health care including gynecologic examinations and Pap smears. The exam can be for birth control, diagnosing an infection, or health maintenance.  Educational information about birth control and prescriptions for various contraceptive options are available. Women presenting with problems about menstruation, suspected vaginal infections and breast complaints are managed in a confidential manner.   All women over the age of 18 are encouraged to have an annual Pap smear and pelvic exam.  Women's Health Clinic

Immunizations

Immunizations against Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, Meningitis and Influenza are available.  Mantoux (TB) testing is also available.

Laboratory Services

To compliment the delivery of comprehensive health care, the Student Health Service Laboratory can perform blood tests, urine analysis, pregnancy tests, STD screening, and Strep cultures. Tests which cannot be performed at the health service are sent to a reference laboratory.

Laboratory tests must be ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner. Orders from students’ home physicians are accepted, and results can be mailed, faxed, or phoned to the referring physician.

The Student Health Service Lab is accredited by the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) and is staffed by a registered medical technologist. COLA is a nationally recognized clinical laboratory accreditation organization which accredits laboratories throughout the United States and it’s territories. COLA is approved by the federal government and is sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Medical Association, and the College of American Pathologists.

Pharmacy Services   pills

Commonly used antibiotics, skin creams, birth control pills and other medications at the health service are available if prescribed by the MD or NP.  Prescriptions from outside providers cannot be filled here.  Over the counter medications for colds, allergies, skin infections and rashes, and pain relief are also available for purchase.

Physical Exams

Physical exams for employment, sports participation, foreign travel,  etc. as well as just general interest and routine can be performed. There is a charge for the exam as well as required laboratory tests or immunizations. Many of these charges are covered by personal health insurance.

Sexually Transmitted Infections testing

Information, evaluation and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases are available from the medical staff. Since one in four Americans may be affected, such problems are common and seeking early attention is encouraged. We can assist you in learning about good health habits and lowering your risk of getting a STI.  For more information about STIs, click here.

Triage service for urgent care and walk-in patients

"Triage" means the process of screening and classification of sick, wounded or injured persons during war or a disaster in order to determine priority of treatment. It is becoming an increasingly popular term used in acute care clinics and emergency rooms to determine the urgency of medical care. At Health Service, we use this concept for the nursing evaluation to determine the specific need for, or urgency of, a clinic appointment or the assistance with a trial of self-care treatment. The triage nurse helps patients to determine the appropriate care of a health problem through phone or in-person visits.
