Community
As a resident in Prentiss-Lucas, I’ve had many opportunities to participate in activities on campus and in the community. Participating in the Goodview Gallop was great. I had never thought about doing a 5K run until my hall staff invited me to do it with them. Proceeds went to the American Cancer Society, I got a chance to meet and run along with people in the Winona community and I felt awesome after finishing my first 5K, a great combination!

Service
Living in the WSU residence halls provides many opportunities to get involved in service learning projects. Service learning is a fun way to get invovled in residence hall life, and allows students to give back to the university. It's a great feeling to be able to walk past something on campus or in the halls and be able to say, "Hey, I helped make that. That wouldn't be there if it wasn't for my help."

Learning
In preparation for our camping trip, we had the students swamp canoes in the Lourdes pool. It it important to understand the feeling of flipping over in a canoe, so that if it happens during a real trip, you don't panic and you know how to respond. It was especially fun, I think, because that is not something you normally get to do in an orientation class. It's important to explore the world outside of your comfort zone every now and then, and we did just that.

Leadership
It’s easy to gain leadership experience in the residence halls. You can get involved in hall council, floor governments and many other activities that help improve your leadership skills. You can also apply to be a Resident Assistant like I did. Being a resident assistant gives the opportunity to shape the lives of your residents and other students. The experiences I gained while being an RA are memorable and very valuable.
