Housing Application Process

Once you have been admitted to Winona State University, you will receive a packet of information on how to secure on-campus housing.  This packet of information will arrive approximately 2 weeks after you've received your WSU admittance letter.

You may apply for housing online, or you may contact our office to request a paper application. If you are having trouble with your Star ID, call the MNSCU Help Desk at 1.877.466.6728.

We guarantee a space in one of our residence halls to those student who apply (with the required pre-payment) by the March 1 deadline.  However, the earlier you apply and pre-pay, the better your chance of getting one of the halls you prefer.  We begin receiving housing applications in October.

The Agreement for Housing and Dining binds you to certain legal requirements. Be sure to review this agreement and contact our office if you have any questions.

Please make certain you are completely familiar with the terms of your Agreement for Housing and Dining. Your signed housing application/agreement is on file and we will send you a copy upon request. This agreement is legally binding for the entire academic year, and you should be sure you understand your contractual responsibilities.

Lofting your bed is one way to maximize the space in your residence hall room.  Please refer to our Loft Information page for more information or to request a loft extension kit.  The loft rental fee for the academic year is $100 and will be applied to your student account within the first few weeks of the semester.

We strongly encourage you to speak with your roommate about the option of lofting your beds.  Loft requests for Fall 2014 must be received by August 1st in order to guarantee in room delivery for August 19th.

If you request a loft and decide to return it before September 8, 2014, there will be a $10 restocking fee applied to your student account.  If you return your loft after September 8, 2014, you will be charged the $50 semester rental fee.

All of our lofts are owned by WSU and stored right in your residence hall.  There will be lofts available for you to request on move-in day, August 19th. 

Please read through the following information carefully regarding room change requests within Winona State University’s residence halls.

If you currently live in a regular room (double or single) and would like to request a room change, the Residence Life Staff require that you follow the process below:

  • Talk to your roommate – If you are having a roommate conflict, please have a verbal conversation with them to talk about how things are going and what is bothering you.  Here are some helpful hints in working through a roommate conflict.
  • Talk to your RA – If you have had a conversation with your roommate and tried to work things out, but your situation has not improved, please contact your RA. Your RA is a great resource who will assist you in having a difficult conversation. They may also assist in facilitating a conversation between you and your roommate to set guidelines within your living situation which is feasible for all students involved.
  • Talk to your Hall Director – You can also set up a meeting with your Hall Director to have a conversation about your current living situation.
  • Fill out the Online Room Change Request Form – Please note that filling out this form is only a request and will be processed as space becomes available within the residence halls.

Again, the Housing & Residence Life Staff make it a priority to relocate those students who were placed in a build-up situation before regular room change requests are granted.

Once you submit your request, you will be contacted by your current Hall Director to set up a meeting. Once your Hall Director approves your request, you will be put on a waiting list based on the date of Hall Director approval. When space is available, you will be contacted by your current Hall Director of your new room assignment and the process of checking into your new room and out of your current room.

Housing agreements for first-year students may be cancelled and $200 of the $250 pre-payment will be refunded if the cancellation is received by July 1, 2015 for the 2015-2016 school year. Cancellations must be received in writing, from the admitted student, to notify our office of their cancellation.

March 1st – Complete application and $250 pre-payment ($50.00 is a non-refundable processing fee) is due in the Housing Office to guarantee your space in the residence halls.  We begin receiving applications in October, so please apply early!

June 15th - Room Assignments and Roommate Information will be available for students to view online. The meal plan option is open to select a meal plan. 

July 1st – Last day for refund of the $200 pre-payment; please notify us IN WRITING.  An e-mail from the admitted student's WSU email address to the Housing Office is acceptable. Please include your name, Star ID, and the reason you are cancelling your Housing Agreement.
