The administration acknowledged the above course approvals.

        3.            Semester Break And Retention

The administration was told that the Faculty Senate "strongly supported" proposals of its reps on the Calendar Committee regarding the                  break between semesters and the inclusion of three Grading Days at the end of each semester.  Further, in connection with the issue of                  the semester break, Faculty Senate directed its reps to ask at Meet and Confer for data concerning the linkage said to exist between                  length of break and retention rate.

                Administration Comments/Responses:

1.         The present proposal regarding the break between semesters appears OK to the administration, as long as it’s not longer than 4 weeks.

2.         Will look into the retention issue for longer weeks.

4.       Disposition Of Tenure/Promotion Summaries

The administration was informed that the Faculty Senate sent to PP&G the summaries of last year's promotion and tenure actions.

5.         Final Exam Policy

The administration was informed that Faculty Senate accepted the Final Exam policy received from them at the 11/25 Meet and Confer (headed "2nd Draft 11/25/02").

The 2nd draft proposed the following statement as a replacement for two previously deleted sentences:

An instructor who wishes to reschedule an exam during final exam week must receive prior approval from the college dean.”

VP Richardson will be sending the approved version to all constituencies.

6.         Faculty Participation In UC-R E-Learning Planning (Electronic Vote)

The administration was informed that Faculty Senate approved using an electronic vote to ratify faculty volunteers to the UC-R's e-Learning work groups, to be identified in mid-December.  FA President Bratt is worried that there is not sufficient time to send out e-mails regarding the different disciplines.

The administrated stated that Christine Clements will be e-mailing the different disciplines to David Bratt at he earliest opportunity.

7.       Honorary Degree

The administration was informed that Faculty Senate passed a motion supporting conferral of an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree upon Stephen Covey, to be given at the WSU Commencement Ceremonies in May 2003.

The administration thanked the Faculty Senate recommendation.

8.          Budget Task Force (item from administration)

The administration would like to begin deliberation of budget principles.  A meeting will be set for all constituency executive groups for Friday Dec. 13th at 2:30 p.m. (Maxwell).   The administration is planning to discuss the principles drafted in January 2001 and present different budget scenarios.  Actual budget plans will be discussed after Governor-elect Pawlenty presents his state budget in January.  It’s not sure that  all constituency groups will participation in the discussion.

D. Bratt has already sent out an e-mail notifying the Faculty Senate of this Friday meeting.

9.          Laptops (item from administration)

The administration (from the Student Senate meeting) learned that students related various concerns dealing with the Laptop program.  The administration proposed that the All-University Technology committee take up these issues.

Faculty Comments/Responses:

1.          What are some of the concerns from students?  Cost and lack of usage in different levels.

2.             Blackboard software will stay.  Blackboard is purchased directly from the company, not connected at all with MnSCU.    However, this software is getting more popular and therefore getting more expensive every year.

10.         Public E-mail Addresses on the Web (IFO addition)

C. Summa pointed out that having public e-mail addresses available on the web creates many extra spam/junk mail.  Is it possible for IT to look into possible solutions to this spam problem?  For example, web browsers such as Webcrawler can seek someone’s email and send out spam.   How about using a “formula” instead of a direct  e-mail link/address?

Administration Comments/Responses:

1.          Many web browsers are quite clever and can get to not only single e-mail addresses but also full e-mail lists within an individual e-mail software; they can also discern/differentiate "formulas" and still send out spam.

2.          Never respond to spam mail!

3.          IT will send out do’s and don’ts on the topic of  e-mail spam.

4.          Filters can be set up to block spam.

5.          IT will look into this issue and return with possible solutions.

6.          The administration would like to have technology items during every Meet and Confer!

 11.             Summer Session (IFO addition)

According to the IFO Contract, D. Bratt stated that there should be two distinct summer sessions.  WSU’s web-page should state the start and end dates for the two summer sessions.

The administration will look into this issue and will make necessary corrections.
