AGENDA
0. Additions
13. Announcements
1. Course Approval
Senate agreed to change the amendment to the University Studies committee charge from:
A2C2 may amend or reject a recommendation of the USS by a vote of 2/3 of the members of A2C2. 2/3 is for
members present and voting. Handed over A2C2 documentation to administration.
2. Final Report and Recommendations of Placement Task Force (May 8, 2000)
The Senate approved recommendations 1, 2, and 3 in the document called "WSU, Placement Exam Task
Force, Final Report and Recommendations", May 8, 2000. Senate voted to ask Professors Deppa and
Johanson to present a proposal for further study of the math placement situation which was more complete and
clear than the proposal that appeared as recorded on the May 8 document. Senate requested this be done
ASAP (by next Senate meeting) as this might have reassigned time ramifications.
3. Ad Hoc Committee on Technology Decision-Making and Communication
The Senate appointed Alex Yard and Sally Sloan to a 4-person committee that is to take up the issue of
communication and decision-making concerning technology. IFO position is that important decisions should be
made in person. Dr. Krueger cited conferences that talked about the "campus" environment; i.e. going away
from "distance" meetings.
4. Grants Director Reporting Line
Senate forwarded concerns over (a) the need for assurance that the change will not lead to a re-focus of that
position away from faculty issues, and (b) the absence of a team approach in the decision-making process.
Faculty Representatives asked for rationale. Administration said job descriptions were not formally changed.
Agreed that process was not a team-decision-making. Main reason was to make use of Grants Director's great
writing talents and help write private funding; i.e. funding for Science Building. This has been Dr. Krueger's
wish for a long time.
5. Action on CLA Search Committee Request
Senate directed Committee on Committees to find only Liberal Arts faculty to fill search committee. Dean Ken
Gorman and Dean Nancy Jannik are the administrators on this search committee. Administration needs
faculty names ASAP.
6. Action on Proposed Residential College Steering Committee
Senate referred to Committee on Committees for staffing of faculty.
7. Action on Proposed Responsible Research Task Force
Senate postponed and invited Grants Director to discuss issues and questions, requirements, etc.
8. Proposed Addition to the All-University Technology Committee
Senate agreed to add VP-Whetstone to committee.
9. Human Subjects Committee Name Change
IRB name would be refined to IRB (Human Subjects). Administration agreed. Name change is so that all committees read
the same nation-wide. No such requirement for just Animal Subjects Research. Question will be cleared up with Grants
Director at next Senate Meeting.
10. Health Survey
Is this an "alpha site"? The issue of privacy of health information on one web-site was brought up by Senate.
Human Resources said this group wanted to give information to WSU employers. Administration is NOT
endorsing this group. Just the information to faculty from administration. Some groups involved are CMH and
HBC. But mainly HR does not know too much about this group.
11. Benches for the Campus
Senate supported bench idea for the campus mall. Issues of stone/rock benches and back-supports were
mentioned to the administration.
12. Lawn Mowing Schedule
Lawn mowing near buildings with classes during lecture times is quite disturbing. Administration said Dick
Lande is considering remedies to the situation.
13. Announcement
A. Fire in Conway- just an hour ago - 110 students are being moved presently to another residence hall for
the night. Potential electrical hazard required the temporary move.
B. GRAUC Board is paying for Marketing survey/study in Rochester. They need faculty support
and faculty study group. Need to identify all interests. Administration requesting representation of
faculty based in Rochester. Week of Nov. 14 is first meeting. Faculty need to participate.
C. Search of Associate VPAA is at the last stages of interviewing.
D. Fall enrollment is at a record high and the ACT of entering students is also at record high.
Respectfully Submitted,
Bill Ng.
