Meeting Minutes of January

I. The meeting was called to order at 3:36pm by Chair Charla Miertschin.
II. Adoption of agenda by consensus.
III. Approval of minutes of January 14, 2004 (available at http://www.winona.edu/ifo/a2c2mintues/) evote minutes have been updated, including the HIST 467 course. Boseker/Schumacher, m/s, to approve. No discussion. Motion passed.
IV. Chair’s report. Next scheduled meeting is Feb 11 which is Assessment Day. Due to faculty being involved in Assessment day activities, motion made to cancel February 11, 2004 A2C2 meeting.

VII. Course and Program Proposal Subcommittee (CPPS) report by Ed Thompson. BUED course hour changes made to comply with MnSCU course hour requirements.

A2C2 approved all courses and program.
VIII. University Studies Subcommittee (USS) report, J. Paul Johnson.
A. Course Substitution Requests
Kellie Steffen (PER 227) US course substitution request was turned down. USS recommendation to disapprove passed.
Tanya Barth (BIOL104) US course substitution request was tabled at USS. This will be considered at next USS meeting.
Mr. Johnson asked departments to be aware of listing USP courses such as ENG111 as prerequisites for Writing Flag courses. But it was pointed out that doing this increases the ‘required’ hours totals for a program, which can cause problems. Guidance needed as to how to proceed and deal with this situation.
B. USPAP- still under discussion. Issue arose regarding faculty compensation for service.

X. Old Business
A. Calendar Committee - call for members: (minimum of three) - no volunteers.
B. WSU Culture Diversity Plan - statement presented to Faculty Senate:
A2C2 endorsed the following comment from the University Studies Subcommittee: While USS members certainly expressed enthusiasm for the mission of the Cultural Diversity Plan; the committee members were all opposed to the initiation of a new core course required of all students. Instead, the committee proposes that the Unity & Diversity category of the USP be the framework within which curricular development associated with cultural diversity would occur.
Furthermore, A2C2 members expressed the following comments: The Cultural Diversity Plan is coming at a good time with respect to planning the Winona Experience. International students enrich our campus environment and our classrooms. Most questions raised mirrored that of the senate: From where are the resources coming to implement the plan? Many of the strategies indicated that Academic Deans are responsible for implementation. Is this appropriate for those areas which involve curriculum? What is the Cultural Diversity Curriculum Committee? Most A2C2 members were unaware that such a committee had ever existed, thus how could it be reestablished? There was also concern and support for the ESL offerings through the English department.
XI. New Business
A. Management of Information Systems and Operations (MISO) - new department to be separated from the Business Administration department - from Faculty Senate on January 26, 2004. Kim Snyder fielded questions. Computer Science department fully supports this development. Kimberlee Snyder will serve as chair of this new department.
B. WSU Culture Diversity Plan
