Keyserver Information

What is the KeyServer?

KeyServer is a cost effective solution for providing special use software for use here at WSU.

How does KeyServer work?

KeyServer limits the number of users who can use a program at a particular time based on the number of software licenses available. For instance, if there are 200 licenses of Adobe Photoshop available, it means only 200 people will be allowed to use Photoshop at a particular time. License usage should never be a problem for clients as WSU purchases more licenses as needed. Note: All software needed to connect to the KeyServer is automatically installed when the controlled software is installed.

What is required to connect to the KeyServer?

The KeyServer requires an active network connection to grant program usage. On campus, it is recommended that a wired connection is used to connect to the network. Off campus, VPN must be connected over a broadband connection (Cable or DSL) so that your computer can connect to our KeyServer.

Limitations:

The KeyServer can not differentiate between personally owned and University owned software. Clients wishing to purchase their own software will find that the KeyServer will restrict them from using that software if that software is controlled by our KeyServer. There is nothing that can be done about this because of the way KeyServer is designed. If the client wishes, they can stop into tech support and have the KeyServer client uninstalled along with all University owned KeyServer software. Clients with dial up internet at home will not be able to connect to the KeyServer even if VPN connects. They KeyServer doesn’t support dialup connections.

How does WSU benefit from using KeyServer?

To recap, the use of KeyServer at WSU reduces the costs of purchasing special use software. By regulating software license usage with KeyServer, WSU can purchase many fewer licenses for a particular software and still serve everyone that needs it.

For the students, it will be convenient since they won’t have to go to a separate computer lab to do their work. Students can do their work from anywhere on campus or by a connection through VPN over a broadband connection. KeyServer also saves the student from having to purchase a personal license.
