Network File Storage

This page is designed to inform Winona State University network users of their network storage options, how to access the storage, what the limit is on size and content for the storage space, and when the files are backed up.

Possible Storage Areas

Student Storage, class storage, and department storage are the three storage options.

Description of Service

Student storage
Each student has storage on \\store\students\username or the J: drive.
The username will be the same as the network login name.
The storage folder has a default quota of 20MB.

Department Storage
All departments have a department storage volume on \\store\department or the K: drive.
The storage space is for the sharing of files inside the department, all members have read/write access.
The Department storage folder has a default quota of 10GB split between all users.

Class Storage
Class is available by request from the faculty or staff member and is located on \\store\classes or the L: drive.
The class folder will be named the 6-digit MNSCU course ID, with student usernames inside.
The storage folder has a default quota of 500MB.
For more information on class storage see Classes.

Personal Storage
Personal storage is available to faculty and staff members and is located on \\store\users or the J: drive.
The Personal storage folder is has the same name as the Domain username.
The storage folder has a default quota of 300MB.

Creation of Storage Areas

Student storage is created from a script that runs within 24hrs of Domain Account Creation.
Department storage is created manually upon request.
Class storage is created upon request from faculty by filling out this form.

Content Limitations and Suggestions

Do not put copyrighted material on the network storage spaces (mp3, wma, avi, etc...)
Because of the limited space, if storing files for a long time consider compressing the files into a zip file.
Try to avoid using spaces in the names of files and folders.

Backup

All network storage volumes are backed up nightly.  This makes network storage ideal for storing important documents.
3-1/2 floppy disks can damage easily and the network storage volumes can be accessed from anywhere on the network.

Accessing Storage Space

Storage space can only be accessed while logged onto the Domain.

For student storage:

Go to My Computer >> (J:)
