WSU Copyright Policy

Copyright, the right for an individual to assert ownership of materials they produced, is protected by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 8: "To Promote the Progress of Sciences and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.”

Copyright protects many types of materials including written documents, photographs, film, paintings, theatrical works and music as well as digital media. Official claims are processed by the United States Copyright Office.

Winona State University encourages the use of materials for educational fair use within the guidelines set forth by the 1976 U.S. Copyright Law and the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The University of Texas provides a detailed list of guidelines for copyright and educational fair use.
