WSU Newspaper Databases

The two WSU Databases that are primarily used to access current newspapers:
Lexis-Nexis

Lexis-Nexis has access to a broad collection of full-text newspaper articles, as well as other articles in business trade journals, law court opinions, legislative testimony, social statistical tables and academic journals. Browsing by date is not possible in Lexis-Nexis.

When searching for a specific newspaper in Lexis-Nexis:
  1. Click on the "Sources" link near the top right corner of the page (in the black banner).
  2. Type in the newspaper title, such as the New York Times, or browse the alphabetical list.
  3. Then select "Search this title".
  4. Upon returning to the "Guided News Search" page, note in Step Five that the search will only search for articles in the newspaper title that was selected.

Note: If you are off-campus or in the dorms attempting to access Lexis-Nexis, you will need to sign in using your 14-digit barcode on the back of your WSU ID and your last name.


Proquest Newspapers

Proquest Newspapers has access to over 300 United States and international news sources, including coverage of over 150 major United States and international newspapers. Proquest Newspapers is ideal for browsing publications by date. Proquest Newspapers is provided by ELM: Electronic Library for Minnesota.

When searching for a specific newspaper that is available in Proquest Newspapers:
  1. Click on the green "Publications" tab near the top left corner of the page.
  2. In the "Publications Search" textbox, type in the newspaper title, such as the Wall Street Journal, or click on the appropriate letter under the "Show all publications".
  3. Select the title from the results list. For example, when searching for the Wall Street Journal, three titles will appear: Wall Street Journal, Eastern Edition; Wall Street Jouranl, Europe; The Wall Street Journal Asia, Hong Kong.
  4. Then either type in the search term(s) into the "Search for articles within this publication" text box, or select a date from the list of publication dates.

Historical Newspapers

Chicago Tribune Historical
A full text online archive of the Chicago Tribune from April 23, 1849-December 31,1985 made available through Proquest Historical Newspapers database. In memory of Alex Yard, a Winona State University History Professor.

Early American Newspapers
A full text online archive of hundreds of historic newspapers listed in Clarence Brigham's authoritative bibliography and in additional subsequent bibliographies. 1690-1876.

The Times (London)
Palmer's Index to the Times from October 1790 to December 1905. Full text is only available from 1800-1870.

Minneapolis Tribune Historical
Contains full-text and article images from the Minneapolis Tribune (1867-1908) and the Minneapolis Morning Tribune (1909-1922). Provided by ELM: Electronic Library for Minnesota.

New York Times Historical
A full text online archive of The New York Times from 1851-2003 made available through Proquest Historical Newspapers database.

Winona Newspaper Project
A full text online archive covering the Winona newspapers: Winona Argus, Winona Daily Republican, and the Winona Republican-Herald through 1976. Made available through the Winona State University Darrell W. Krueger Library with the support of the Minnesota Historical Society and the cooperation of the Winona County Historical Society.

The Winonan - Student Newspaper Archive
A full text online archive of the student newspaper at Winona State University. The archive covers newspapers from 1919-2010.


Note: If you are off-campus or in the dorms attempting to access the Chicago Tribune Historical, Early American Newspapers, Minneapolis Tribune Historical or New York Times Historical, you will need to sign in using your 14-digit barcode on the back of your WSU ID and your last name. The Winona Newspaper Project is accessible to everyone on or off campus.

New York Times

  • Electronic full-text: available from 1980 via Proquest Newspapers, New York Times and Lexis-Nexis
    Follow the instructions in the above WSU Newspaper Databases section on how to locate the New York Times in Proquest Newspapers or Lexis-Nexis. Proquest Newspapers will allow you to browse the publication dates of the New York Times, whereas Lexis Nexis will only allow searching.

    Follow the instructions in the above WSU Newspaper Databases section on how to locate the Wall Street Journal in Proquest Newspapers. Proquest Newspapers will allow you to browse the publication dates of the Wall Street Journal. For the United States news, select "Eastern Edition".
  • Paper: most recent two months available on the newspaper shelves, except for the two most current weeks, which are availble at the Circulation Desk.
