    The main clearinghouse for reports that contractors have written on federally funded scientific and technical research. The full text of the reports can be purchased. The index is available from 1990 to the present.

  • U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
    Also, search their Patent Database from 1976 to the present; abstracts only, no full patent image. The resources here are free. Advantage: Unlimited results and free. Patent applications. Disadvantage: Limited data for older patents. US patents only. Clumsy search interface.

  • Espacenet
    A free site for patents from Europe, Japan and the World Intellectual Property Organization made available from the European Patent Office. Also has some US patents and US patent applications. Allows international classification searches.

  • Google Patent Search
    Over 7 million US patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) are now searchable through Google. Advantage: Better information on older US patents than the USPTO. Disadvantages: Fewer searchable fields than USPTO, and only returns first hundred results.
