The Cal Fremling Scholarship
“Cal Fremling inspired me so much and so well as a student that I graduated summa cum laude from Winona State and then earned a law degree from Stanford University,” says Frank Fox ‘80, who with his wife, Kathleen, established the Cal Fremling Scholarship.
Fremling, a noted biology professor and expert on the ecology of the Upper Mississippi River, inspired hundreds of students. He retired as professor emeritus in 1991 after teaching at Winona State for 32 years.
Frank is now an attorney with Majors and Fox, LLP, a law firm in San Diego. He and Kathleen enjoy spending time raising their two daughters and renovating their old Spanish home in the San Diego foothills.
“My success is in no small measure rooted in the education and inspiration I found at Winona State,” says Frank. “And nobody inspired me more than Cal Fremling did.”
“I feel obliged to recognize the important role that Winona State played in my life. Knowing that I am helping students who need and deserve financial assistance in Cal’s name is a satisfying way to honor him and give back to the university.”
The Cal Fremling Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior at Winona State with a declared major in biology who is pursuing either the ecology or environmental science option.
