The Rosemary Langston Scholarship
This fall, my husband and I attended a scholarship benefactor dinner at his alma mater, and I was once again reminded of the joy of giving and my own experience as a student and alumna of Winona State University’s nursing program. I was a non-traditional college student – already married and living off-campus – so I missed dorm life, late night study sessions, and those wonderful shared stories. But as unique as each of our lives were while at Winona State, we will always be connected by the bonds of our profession – nursing – and the outstanding guidance and education we received at Winona State.
When one of my favorite professors, Dean Rosemary Langston, retired in 1989, I joined with fellow students and faculty members in donating to a scholarship in her name. Over the next 18 years, I contributed annually to the Langston Scholarship with little awareness of the tremendous need for student scholarships. Then in 2008, I made a commitment to the WSU Foundation to co-chair the Light the Way Scholarship Campaign and to focus on my passion, increasing scholarship opportunities for WSU nursing students.
I challenged myself in the early 80s to earn a nursing degree and am truly grateful for that experience. When I was asked to be a part of the Light the Way Campaign, I knew it was time for another kind of challenge. The Langston Scholarship initially provided one $200 annual award – that is simply not enough for today’s students. It was time for me to step up my giving and encourage fellow nursing alums to join me in honoring Rosemary’s leadership.
Today, I propose a challenge to you – from one nursing alumna to another. Please consider joining me in creating a lasting legacy for future generations of nurses. In this spirit, I have donated $10,000 to the Langston Scholarship. My hope is this gift will serve as a challenge to you to join together to match my contribution. Together we can grow this scholarship to help meet the needs of today’s students. Together we can honor our past and plant a seed for the future. Let’s come together and make a significant impact on nursing students at Winona State University. We can make a difference.
