Flute Syllabus

Prof. Zoe Shepherd
Winona State University
Music Department
PAC 237, 457-5507 office

Hours: posted on door

APPLIED LESSON PURPOSE:

Applied Lessons are intended for undergraduate flute students majoring or minoring in music. The lessons are directed toward developing competencies and understandings that will contribute to the goals of becoming a better flutist, teacher, and musician.

APPLIED LESSON OBJECTIVES:
  • Increase flute performance skills including:
    • techniques concerning sound production, breath support, embouchure, tonguing,
    • rhythmic and pitch discrimination skills including sight reading and transposition
    • awareness, understanding, and synthesis of the elements required for
sensible interpretive decisions in musical performance.
  • Gain familiarity with the musical and pedagogical literature associated with the flute and stimulate
interest in professional literature related to the flute and woodwind playing
  • Gain a practical understanding of the learning process aimed at increased efficiency and economy
    in skill acquisition
  • Develop, through listening, the awareness, appreciation, and critical discernment of varying
    types of music.
  • Develop and apply appropriate strategies for dealing with performance stress and anxiety
  • Acquire the self-initiative and ability for continued self-study in flute beyond the formal
    educational environment.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. All applied music students are expected to attend lessons regularly and to progress as a performing musician.

  2. Music Majors enrolled in applied lessons will perform on at least one student recital (exemptions by instructor) and final juries.

  3. Non-Music Majors may perform on the student recital at the discretion
        of the instructor.

  4. JURIES --- All applied students will perform at the final juries before a panel of instructors:

    JURY CONSIDERATIONS...

    * - Juries will be graded- the jury grade will count 25% towards you applied lesson grade.

    * - Your Jury performance will consist of prepared material i.e. scales, etude(s), solo literature.

    * - Appropriate professional attire is required (no jeans, T-shirts, etc.) failure to comply will result in dismissed jury.

    * - Juries will be videotaped for your portfolio. You are required to bring a video tape to your jury.

  5. Attendance at the Wednesday Noon Recital/Forum is mandatory. You are allowed one unexcused absence. Additional unexcused absences will lower your grade one letter grade. You will be signing in at the end of each Wednesday Noon recital/forum. Do not forget! It is your responsibility to make sure your attendance is accurate.

  6. All applied flute students are required to attend any and all flute recitals.  Attendance is recorded through Concert Attendance. Failure to attend all flute recitals will lower your grade by one letter grade.

  7. No whining!  Keep a professional attitude and manner.

GRADING:

Final grade will be based upon the fulfillment of the requirements and the general development of skills.  See detailed account of grading procedure below.

LISTENING ASSIGNMENT

Listening to quality performances of the instruments musicians play is a vital component to one's development. In an effort to encourage more listening of excellent role models, I am requiring students to listen to 2 (TWO) recordings of anything associated with their instrument (i.e. concertos, sonatas, etc.). Student will turn in a brief listening report at midterm. Forms are available from me.

Flute Book of Articles, etc.

All students are expected to have a 3 ring binder to accumulate articles dealing with the flute. Each semester I ask that you do a small amount of research on the flute--something that you are interested in. At midterm, turn in to me the articles that you are putting in your book. You need to find a minimum of two.

Flute Practice Journal

All students are required to keep a daily record of your practicing, including metronome speeds, etudes, solos, and other goals discussed in your lesson.

ATTENDANCE:

Because applied music lessons are by nature an ongoing experience that will yield results over a period of time, you are expected to attend your lessons regularly. Your attendance at lessons will be recorded. If your instructor misses your lesson for a non-WSU related reason, the lesson will be re-scheduled. If you miss a lesson for an unexcused absence, the lesson will not be re-scheduled. If you expect to miss a lesson, arrange for your absence in advance with the instructor. The decision of an absence being excused or unexcused lies solely with the instructor. Unexcused absences will result in your final grade being lowered one letter grade for each absence.

APPLIED LESSONS

( FLUTE)

*******************************************************

PROFICIENCIES IN FLUTE

Listed below are the requirements for each level in flute study. Initially, an incoming freshman student must audition to determine the level of competency. Students who are not up to standard college level playing may be place in a rudimentary level--064. In order for a student to pass on to the next level of study, the student must be able to satisfactorily demonstrate the competency of the respective level. The levels are sequential. A student is not allowed to skip levels.

The material listed for each level is intended to act as a guideline. For the jury, the student will be asked to play an etude, a solo, and scales as outlined under each level. The student will be judged on tone, musicality, rhythm, articulation and technique.
