Admission Requirements for Music Majors 

All incoming students who wish to major in music must:

• Perform an audition
• Successfully complete a music theory and aural skills assessment exam
• Have a personal interview with a professor in their major field

Students electing a performance major (B.A. Performance) must pass a performance review at the end of the first year to receive full acceptance into the performance degree program. Methods of assessment include juries, recitals and written examinations.

Students will receive a letter confirming their status. If admitted, the student will enter either as a music major, or as a major with Probationary Status (at the discretion of performing area full-time faculty and if sufficient room is available in the applied studio).

Admission Requirements for Music Minors 

All incoming students who wish to minor in music must:

• Perform an audition
• Successfully complete entrance examinations in theory and aural skills

Students will receive a letter confirming their status. If admitted, the student will enter either as a music major, or as a major with Probationary Status (at the discretion of performing area full-time faculty and if sufficient room is available in the applied studio).

Admission Requirements for Transfer Students 

• Perform an entrance audition to determine level of lesson registration
• Take a music theory and aural skills assessment exam to determine skill level (regardless of whether theory credits are transferred)
• Take a music history assessment exam to determine level of knowledge (only if music history credits are transferred)
• Complete a minimum of one year of applied study at WSU at the level required for the individual degree program
• Complete a minimum of one year in the large ensemble appropriate to the performance medium at WSU and satisfy ensemble requirements as stated in the WSU catalog
• Perform all recitals required for the degree program at WSU (after at least one year of study with a WSU instructor)

Audition Procedures and Dates 

Auditions for both admission into the music program and for scholarships are held every year during the Spring semester. A music theory and aural skills assessment exam is also administered on scholarship audition days.

Summer Registration 

Students who do not declare a music major or minor until summer registration and have not auditioned, will need to take the theory and aural skills test during the first week of classes. Auditions must be held prior to the end of the first week of classes.  Application forms must be completed at registration.

Students who do not declare their major or minor until summer registration will receive provisional acceptance into the program. After the completion of their audition and theory/aural skills test, students will receive a letter confirming their status. If admitted, the student will enter either as a music major or minor, or as a music major or minor with Probationary Status (at the discretion of performing area full-time faculty and if sufficient room is available in the applied studio).

Probationary Status 

Music majors or minors will need to take lessons at the 060 level (credits do not count towards graduation) and, depending on their theory entrance exam scores, may need to take the Introduction to Theory course (MUS 120) to improve their knowledge and skill levels to that of a fully-admitted first year music major or minor.
