WSU Recognized for Community Service

Story by: WSU Office of University Communication

honorroll Winona State University has been named to the 2008 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

WSU earned the honor of “With Distinction,” for its commitment to service and civic engagement on campus and in the United States. The recognition is from the highest levels of government.

For the official news release, visit: http://cs.winona.edu/ets/honorroll.html.

“We are thrilled and honored to receive this national award.  It recognizes the mission of WSU and the true spirit of our students,” said Joan Francioni, Director of the Center for Engaged Teaching and Scholarship. “WSU is committed to engaging our students in relevant and important work while they are here. Through the different service projects this past year, especially the flood-relief efforts, our students were able to experience, firsthand, the power of helping others when they are hurting. These lessons will last them a lifetime.”

The selection process includes criteria such as: the percentage of total student enrollment engaged in community service activities; percentage of total student enrollment engaged in at least 20 hours of community service per semester; percentage of total student enrollment engaged in academic service-learning courses; extent to which the institution offers academic service-learning courses; the institution’s latest Federal Work-Study community service participation rate, as reported by the U.S. Department of Education; and whether community service or service-learning is cited in the institution’s mission statement or strategic plan.

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. The Honor Roll is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.
