WSU Professor Receives Good Neighbor Award

Story by: WSU Office of University Communication

D._Lovejoy.jpg Winona State University announces professor Donald Lovejoy has been recognized with the WCCO Good Neighbor Award.

The Good Neighbor Award is given to someone who is respectful, trustworthy and a noted volunteer in the community. Good Neighbors are chosen each day according to a monthly category. March’s category was people who contribute to local food shelves. Recipients are recognized Monday - Friday at 7:52 a.m., 12:40 p.m. and 5:50 p.m. on WCCO 830AM radio.

Lovejoy started the WSU Department of Music’s “Concert for the Hungry” in 2001 in support of the Winona Food Shelf. He also persuaded students and employees to donate proceeds from annual the spring concert to the food shelf after reading an article about Minnesota FoodShare Month. The Minnesota FoodShare’s March Campaign unites Minnesota corporations, faith communities, schools and civic groups for one month to focus on the issues of hunger and raise cash and food donations for the state's food shelves.

Lovejoy was motivated by his personal experience with helping deliver food as a child to those who were unable to provide meals to their family.

“He encourages community responsibility, exemplifies a caring spirit for the needy and challenges his students to do the same,” said Sandra Burke, Winona Volunteer Services executive director, who nominated Lovejoy for the award.

Said Lovejoy: “I’m honored to be recognized in this way, and I would like to share this honor with the WSU band and orchestra students who perform in the ‘Holiday Concert for the Hungry’ each year.”

For more information, call Burke at 507-452-5591 or Lovejoy at 507-457-5257.
