WSU Faculty Receive $125,000 in STEM Grants

Story by: WSU Office of University Communication

Three Winona State University faculty have been awarded with grants to advance science, technology, engineering and math teaching and learning.

Geoscience professor Cathy Summa received $107,000 for “Toward the Creation of a statewide Infrastructure for STEM Education and STEM Teacher Support,” a comprehensive two-year statewide initiative that will provide faculty development and resources for college students studying to be teachers. The project is a partnership with the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Physics professor Andrew Ferstl received $8,000 for “Teaching and Learning Science with    Learning Assistants,” a project that will use learning assistants in an integrated science class for pre-service elementary school teachers. The assistants will attend class, mentor students through science activities and act as liaisons between students and instructors.

Mathematics & Statistics professor Aaron Wangberg received $10,000 for “Self-Explanation Tutorials on Pre-requisite Material for Calculus I Students,” a project that will develop 150 self-explanation tutorials for 75 students in two calculus courses to improve the percentage of students who pass that mathematics class.

“This is remarkable news at a time when every dollar counts,” said WSU President Judith Ramaley. “It is an affirmation of the efforts we are making to prepare all of our students for life and work in the 21st century and to encourage more of our students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These fields offer vital insights that we all must understand and use if we are to do well in a rapidly changing world.”

The grants were administered by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system’s Center for Teaching and Learning and the P-16 Collaboration unit. A total of $305,000 was awarded to 11 faculty in the MnSCU system. The projects will begin this month and be completed by June 2011.
