WSU Campuses Have $60 Million in Projects Underway

Story by: WSU Office of University Communication

Winona State University campuses are rife with activity this summer as the university manages more than $60 million in construction projects.

Projects range from new construction—including the Integrated Wellness Complex and New Residence Hall, both scheduled for completion by fall 2010—to smaller projects like remodeling at Maria Hall, electrical work and renovation in Lourdes Hall, HVAC work and remodeling in Phelps Hall and replacing the turf of Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.

In addition, the university will add to the green space on campus with the demolition of Howell Hall. Constructed in 1956, Howell most recently housed the Mass Communication Department TV studio, Media Services, Student Services offices, faculty offices and conference rooms. Demolition work will continue through early August.

WSU is also set to receive $1.2 million in Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) funds as part of President Obama’s economic stimulus package. The funds will support projects such as elevator maintenance in Gildemeister Hall, remodeling in Phelps Hall and tuckpointing on various campus buildings.

According to Campus Planner Jay McHenry, the level of construction and remodeling activity across the campuses is significant compared to other years.

“We’re really serving as an economic engine right now,” McHenry said. “We’re working with 140 contractors, numerous subcontractors and other vendors on more than 100 projects.”
More than one-third of the prime contractors are from either Winona, La Crosse or Rochester, with a majority of the workforce coming from the immediate area as well, McHenry added.
