WSU Children’s Centers Receive Grant
Story by: WSU Office of University Communication
The Winona State University Children’s Centers have received a federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education to support the participation of low-income parents in postsecondary education.
The grant, awarded through the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) Program, will be used to subsidize student parent child care tuition costs as well as increase campus and community-wide parent outreach programs. The funds are anticipated to be awarded over the course of four years and will total just over $170,000.
June Reineke, director of the centers, said the funding was awarded through a highly competitive grant process and she is pleased WSU was selected.
“For many student families, difficult decisions are made as they juggle school, work and child care schedules on very tight household budgets.” Reineke said. “This grant program encourages student’s academic progress by supporting their unique needs as student parents and assuring a quality education and care environment for their children.”
The WSU Children’s Centers serve about 200 children per year, approximately one-third of whom are children of WSU students. About 75 percent of these student parents meet low-income guidelines.
