Students Win Green Design Contest
Story by: WSU Office of University Communication
Two Winona State University students were named the first quarter winners for Digi International’s Green Design Contest.
Senior computer science major Danish Shrestha and recent graduate Andrew Popp used iDigi wireless development kits to create an intelligent home automation system that anticipates human activity and monitors temperature, light and motion sensors. The system uses this information to determine energy saving actions such as automatically opening and closing room vents.
Shrestha said they were looking to create a home automation system for heating and lighting from the future. Besides automated venting systems, the team implemented a Web site that allows users to have full control over their devices and sensors, as well as their behavior.
“We really tried hard to make this a feasible solution for problems that we saw related to energy consumption,” said Shrestha.
Joel Young, CTO and senior vice president of Digi International research and development, said Popp and Shrestha scored highly in every aspect of the judging criteria.
“Their submission was innovative, demonstrated a strong green impact and was well thought out and presented,” he said.
The contest submission began as two separate projects the students were working on for their computer science senior seminar class.
Digi Green Contest was organized by Digi International to challenge engineers, students and hobbyists to develop a creative solution that demonstrates how to conserve resources. Digi International announces a winner at the end of each quarter; and a prize of $1,500 is awarded to the winner. At the end of the year, overall winners will be chosen from the complete pool of submissions during the course of the competition.
