Enrollment Steady at WSU

Story by: WSU Office of Communication

Winona State campus Winona State University continues to demonstrate positive enrollment trends for fall semester 2009, including record enrollment and an all-time high average ACT score for incoming freshmen.

According to enrollment figures taken on the tenth day of the semester, the total student headcount at WSU is 8,606, topping even last fall's all-time high tenth-day headcount of 8,450. In addition, because WSU students are taking more credit hours of classes, actual full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment is up again this fall, totaling 8,130 compared to last fall's FTE of 7,989.

Enrollment at WSU-Rochester is also on the rise with a total of 772 undergraduate and graduate students studying on the Rochester campus, up almost 10 percent from 697 in fall 2008.

According to Connie Gores, Vice President for Student Life and Development, the university’s continued growth is meaningful, especially in the face of a worldwide recession.

“This trend of growing enrollment demonstrates that Winona State University is in demand,” said Gores. “We continue to offer programs that are attractive to prospective students, and we provide a singular experience that appeals to students. In short, we’re a community that people want to join.”

Winona State University chose to close first-year student applications in March 2009, yet was still able to meet and exceed enrollment targets for both new entering freshmen and transfer students. In fall 2009, 1,813 freshmen enrolled at WSU, and new entering transfer student populations increased exponentially, rising 20 percent from 463 in fall 2008 to 579 in fall 2009.

In addition, first-year retention rates continue to increase, with almost 75 percent of the fall 2008 new entering freshmen returning this fall. Four-year graduation rates also increased more than 2.5 percent, jumping from 25.6 percent last year to 28.3 percent this year.

The university’s excellent academic reputation, along with its demonstrated commitment to preparing students to apply their knowledge and skills to real world problems, continues to attract a diverse student body with a strong academic profile, continued Gores, citing WSU’s average ACT score, which climbed another two-tenths of a point in 2009, from 22.6 to 22.8.

“I see active, engaged students with a lot of energy,” said Gores. “They’re academically focused and very serious about their commitment to education.”
