Winona Symphony Orchestra Presents Concert of Film Music
Story by: WSU Office of University Communication
The Winona Symphony Orchestra presents a concert of film music Sunday, Feb. 25, at 4:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
The concert features film scores from the Golden Age of Hollywood up to the present.
The WSO opens the program with Max Steiner's 1933 score to the critically acclaimed movie King Kong. Steiner's score set the standards and model for scores to follow.
The string section is featured on Bernard Herrmann's 1960 score to Psycho. This revolutionary film by Alfred Hitchcock was immortalized by Herrmann's score, especially the famous shower scene.
To celebrate the centenary year of Franz Waxman, the orchestra performs a suite from his film score to Captains Courageous.
The second half of the concert features works by composers who have dominated the second half of the 20th century.
A medley of movie scores from Jerry Goldsmith highlight some of his most dramatic film music, including scores from Papillon, Sand Pebbles, Basic Instinct and Poltergeist.
The WSO also performs Howard Shore's Suite from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Ten-year-old Hunter Tibor, a 5th grader at St. Stans Middle School, joins the symphony on the suite to sing "In Dreams.”
The concert concludes with John Williams' March from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Tickets are $12 for adults and senior citizens, and $5 for WSU students with a WSU ID and high school students and under. Tickets are available at the door or for reservations.
