WSU Student Athletes Receive NCAA Awards

Story by: WSU Office of University Communication

Three Winona State University student athletes received the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Degree-Completion Award.

Senior track and field throwers Elizabeth Bauman of Delano, Minn., Emily King of Cudahy, Wis., and Nicole Lonning of Ellendale, Minn., each received awards.

According to the NCAA Web site, the purpose of the Division II Degree-Completion Award is to provide financial assistance to deserving student athletes who are within 30 semester hours of completion of their first undergraduate degree. Candidates must be students who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received prior athletics financial aid from the NCAA Division II member institution.

Students must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point average. Other factors considered include financial circumstances, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.

Mike Turgeon, an assistant track and field coach and the 2007 Division II North Central Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year, said he is very proud of the way the students have balanced academics and athletics.

“The three women are very deserving of this award,” Turgeon said. “All three have shown great strengths in academics, athletics and community service to the Winona Area.”
