Story by: WSU Office of University Communication

EOness Winona State University English professor Elizabeth Oness won the third annual Gival Press Novel Award for her novel Twelve Rivers of the Body.

Oness receives $3,000 for winning the award, along with the publication of her book in 2008.

According to Kim Roberts, a judge for the Gival Press Novel Award, Twelve Rivers of the Body captures the scene of Washington D.C. in the 1980’s, comparing the plight of the city to the main character’s struggle to find “wholeness and healing.”

Oness’s stories and poetry have been featured in “The Hudson Review,” “Crazyhorse,” “Glimmer Train,” “The Georgia Review,” “The Gettysburg Review” and other magazines. She has received an O. Henry Prize, a Nelson Algren Award and an Iowa Short Fiction Prize. Her first novel, Departures, was published in 2004. She also directs marketing and development for the Sutton Hoo Press.
