In and around Winona State University

Winona, Minnesota

Winona is a city of 25,000 nestled between towering bluffs and situated along the banks of the Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota. WSU is in the center of the city. This picture showcases Lake Park, along with the world famous Sugar Loaf Bluff in the background.

The WSU Campus Mall

The center of Winona State University's campus is now dominated by a wide "greenspace" known as the Campus Mall. A decade ago, streets went through campus and students dodged between moving and parked cars as they moved from building to building. Through the vision of former WSU President Darrell Krueger, resources from private donors, and the expertise of WSU's Grounds Crew, the campus mall is now a beautiful natural area, with large sculptures, trees, shrubs, flower gardens, benches, a fountain, and a small stream and pond. The focal point of the Mall is in the round "Founder's Quotes" placement in front of the library, which features the historic words of some of the founders of the university, etched in stainless steel.

The Library

The Winona State University Library is the newest building on campus. Completed in 1999, this 108,000 square foot building was designed to be "the library of the future." The Library features 808 seats at study tables and study carrels, 75 seats in lounge areas, and 20 group study rooms for 4, 5, and 6 occupants, all with computer data ports. There are about 1,600 data ports spaced every 15 feet throughout the building, making the ability to access information from student laptops very easy. The main entrance features an in-laid terrazzo floor that artistically depicts life along the Mississippi River.

Somsen Hall

Somsen Hall is the main administration building. First floor houses Outreach and Continuing Education and Mugby Junction. The Technical Support Center for the eWarrior Digital Life and Learning Program is on second floor. Third floor is home to the College of Business. The building also features a 1,150 seat auditorium for guest lectures and cultural events.

Kryzsko Commons

Kryzsko Commons is the university's Student Union including food service, book store and many club offices. The "Purple Rooms," and a number of other meeting and conference rooms are located in Kryzsko Commons, as is the WSU Student Answer Center, a place for students to get up-to-date information on just about anything related to Winona State, the city or the area. Architects designed this 1994 addition to look like a River paddle-wheeler.

Maxwell Hall

Maxwell Hall formerly housed the university library. The newly remodeled facility now houses the Warrior Hub: Admissions, Registrar's and Financial Aid on the first floor; Parking Services and the National Child Protection Training Center on the second floor; and Career, Advising and Retention and Disability Services on the third floor.

Phelps Hall

Phelps Hall is the oldest building on campus, constructed in 1909. It originally housed the "Phelps Model School," at which area children took classes from WSU faculty and WSU education students who were preparing to become teachers. The university's Mass Communication and Psychology departments fill most of the building, which also includes a spacious Dance Studio, used by the Department of Theatre and Dance. The formal Garden in front of the building was created and donated by a loyal WSU alumnus in honor of one of his favorite professors.

Lourdes Hall

Lourdes Hall, located one mile west of the main campus, is home to the WSU Residential College. Once a part of the College of St. Teresa, this historic building offers a unique living and learning environment. Students attend classes, dine, study and socialize in the same building along with professors. The WSU Residential College is the first of its kind at a public university in Minnesota.

Wabasha Hall

Wabasha Hall is located two blocks east of the main campus and is home to Student Health Services, the WSU Rec Center and Childcare Services.

Pasteur Hall

Pasteur Hall has been the University's main science facility for almost 50 years. The building houses faculty members from all four natural science departments: biology, chemistry, geoscience and physics. In addition to faculty offices, the building contains six laboratories and several classrooms able to accommodate up to 72 people. In 2005, Pasteur underwent a major renovation to upgrade its facilities and offer students a state of the art experience.

Stark Hall

Stark Hall, completed in 1992, contains the College of Nursing and the Miller Brothers School of Engineering, the first bachelor's degree granting program in the world in Composite Materials Engineering. Stark Hall includes a 150 seat multi-media-equipped auditorium and is connected to Pasteur Hall via an indoor atrium walkway on both first and second floors.

Science Laboratory Center

Construction on WSU's Science Laboratory Center was completed in summer 2004. The facility, made up entirely of science labs and an auditorium-style lecture hall, offers state-of-the-art equipment, including 1,900 data ports, teaching stations wth video projectors, and microscopes that connect to laptops to view and store images. The SLC also houses a three-story geologic rock-wall; a flume lab that includes a replica of the Mississippi River and landscape elevations; and a map of the geology of the Winona area inlaid in the terrazzo floor in the building's spacious atrium. The design of the facility incorporates a number of sustainable features: the wood paneling is made from renewable bamboo; some of the paint and carpet were created from recycled materials; and sky lights were used to save on power.

Minné Hall

Minné Hall is a three-story classroom and faculty office building. The office of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts is located here along with departmental offices for English, Sociology/Social Work, History, Paralegal, Philosophy and Political Science. The Writing Center is on the third floor.

Gildemeister Hall

Home to the WSU College of Education, Gildemeister Hall also houses the Counselor Education, Mathematics and Statistics, Special Education and Educational Leadership department offices. On first floor, both the Career Planning and Placement Center and the Counseling Center are conveniently located and provide services to students year-round.

Performing Arts Center

At the center of campus, the PAC has a 550-seat theater where many drama, dance and music performances occur. The building also houses an experimental "black-box" theatre and a 200-seat Recital Hall. KQAL-FM (89.5), the campus radio station, is on second floor. The PAC is home to the offices for the Music, Communication Studies, and Theatre and Dance departments.

Memorial Hall

The University's recreation center is home to the Health, Physical Education and Recreation department, Athletic Offices, and the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center. The building features a full-size swimming pool, racquetball courts, locker rooms, two gymnasiums and a weight room. Many of WSU's NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics teams practice and compete in Memorial Hall.

Watkins Hall

The Art and Computer Science departments are located in Watkins Hall. The Computer Science department has a full computer lab and a software testing lab in the building. The Art department has classroom and studio spaces and two galleries: a primarily student-focused exhibit space on the second floor and the Paul Watkins Gallery on first floor. The Watkins Gallery features several exhibits each year showcasing local, regional and national artisits in a variety of media: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, fabric and more.
