WSU Announces Tobacco-Free Policy
Story by: WSU Office of University Communication
Effective Jan. 12, 2009, the central and west Winona State University campuses will become tobacco-free.
Current university policy (WSU Regulation 8-3) prohibits smoking and smokeless tobacco usage in all university buildings, anywhere within a 25-foot perimeter of all university buildings, in university motor pool vehicles and within private residence hall rooms.
Recently approved amendments to the existing policy extend the prohibition of tobacco use to include athletic facilities and other public spaces on the campuses.
WSU President Judith Ramaley said, “In accordance with our mission, we are devoted to improving the health and well-being of our campus community by setting an example of healthy practice.”
According to Ramaley, the decision to expand the current policy to include campus open spaces and athletic facilities is based on a review of responses from campus constituency groups and an examination of the growing prevalence of tobacco-free policies in higher education communities and other organizations.
“Wellness and fitness are a major theme for the university, expressed through our Integrated Wellness Complex, our academic programs and our community partnerships,” Ramaley said. “This is the natural next step, to practice what we teach.”
An internal team will be appointed in fall 2008 to disseminate information on the policy, develop a plan for implementation, and identify resources for students and employees wishing to reduce usage of or quit using tobacco products.
