WSU Announces Fall 2008 Enrollment Figures

Story by: WSU Office of University Communication

Winona State University continues to demonstrate positive enrollment trends for fall semester 2008, including record enrollment and a consistent average ACT score for incoming freshmen.

According to enrollment figures taken on the tenth day of the semester, the total student headcount at WSU is 8,450, the highest in WSU’s history, and more than two percent higher than last fall's tenth-day headcount of 8,274. In addition, because WSU students are taking more credit hours of classes, actual full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment is up this fall at 7,989, compared to last fall's FTE of 7,792, an increase of 2.5 percent.

WSU is proud of its status as a competitive institution. The university chose to close first-year student applications in March 2008, and was still able to meet enrollment targets. In fall 2008, 1,877 new entering freshmen enrolled at WSU, compared with 1,734 new freshmen in fall 2007, an increase of more than eight percent.

The first-year retention rates for the fall 2007 new entering class are also up, increasing to 74 percent from last year’s 72 percent.

Four-year graduation rates showed a 1.5 percent increase, from 24.1 percent last year to 25.6 percent this year.

Of the total fall 2008 head count, 7,726 are studying on the main campus or west campus in Winona, 697 are enrolled in courses at the WSU-Rochester Center, and 27 students are taking courses in the custom training programs or at other off-campus locations.

According to Carl Stange, WSU Director of Admissions, the university remains in high demand not only because of its academic reputation and continued success in our student programs, but also its demonstrated commitment to preparing students to creatively, responsibly and adaptively apply their knowledge and skills to important real world problems.

"One of the activities that impressed me last year was how our students stepped up to help the region in its time of need after the 2007 floods," Stange said.

"This generation is concerned about the world and the environment," he said. "When prospective students and parents see us working together during a crisis, being proactive as a community, they want to become a part of this university community."

WSU boasts the largest freshman class in the university’s history, Stange continued, which can be attributed to the university’s continuing record of achievement, including being named Best in the Midwest by The Princeton Review for the fifth consecutive year, ranked 13th among top public institutions in the Midwest Region Master's Category by U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges 2009, and listed as one of America’s Best College Buys for 12 consecutive years.
