Winona State University’s Cultural Diversity Director, Alexander Hines, recently received an award from the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commission. An award ceremony took place Sept. 29 at the Grand Casino Commissions Convention Center in Onamia, Minn.

Each year the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commission holds a conference to recognize individuals dedicated to human rights. The league selected Hines as a recipient of the 2007 award for his commitment to and accomplishments in the cause of human rights.

Hines exemplifies the leagues goals by raising awareness of all forms of discrimination including ability and disability, racial, sexual orientation, economic status, and religious affiliation. Hines has previously received the volunteer of the year award from the National Urban League and has worked with the NAACP.

Hines works on many projects at WSU and throughout the city of Winona to build cultural competence of students and community members.  He currently serves on the board of Project FINE and works with Cotter High School, Winona National Bank, Winona School District 861, and leads cultural competence training programs at WSU.
