in and around Winona State University
Comments are welcome. E-mail: Tom Grier.

Winona,
Minnesota
Winona is a lovely city of 25,000 nestled
between towering bluffs and situated along the banks of the Mississippi
River in Southeastern Minnesota. WSU is in the center of the city. This
picture shows the world famous SugarLoaf Bluff in the foreground, Lake
Winona and the city.
The
WSU Campus Mall
The center of Winona State University's campus is now
dominated by a wide "greenspace" known as the Campus Mall. A decade ago,
streets went through campus and students dodged between moving and parked
cars as they moved from building to building. Through the vision of WSU
President Darrell Krueger, resources from private donors, and the expertise
of WSU's Grounds Crew, the campus mall is now a beautiful natural area,
with large sculptures, trees, shrubs, flower gardens, benches, a fountain,
and a small stream and pond. The focal point of the Mall is in the round
"Founder's Quotes" placement in front of the library, which features the
historic words of some of the founders of the university, etched in stainless
steel.
The
Library
The Winona State University Library is the newest building
on campus. Completed in 1999, this 108,000 square foot building was designed
to be "the library of the future." The Library features 808 seats at study
tables and study carrels, 75 seats in lounge areas, and 20 group study
rooms for 4, 5, and 6 occupants, all with computer data ports. There are
about 1,600 data ports spaced every 15 feet throughout the building, making
the ability to access information from student laptops very easy. The
main entrance features an in-laid terrazzo floor that artistically depicts
life along the Mississippi River.
Somsen
Hall
Somsen Hall is the main administration building. First
floor houses Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar's and Adult Entry Program
offices. The Technical Support Center for the WSU Laptop Program and the
main Computer Lab is on second floor. Third floor is home to the College
of Business. The building also features a 1,150 seat auditorium for guest
lectures and cultural events.
Kryzsko Commons
Kryzsko Commons is the university's Student Union including
food service, book store and many club offices. The "Purple Rooms," and
a number of other meeting and conference rooms are located in Kryzsko
Commons, as is the WSU Student Resource Center, a place for students to
get up-to-date information on just about anything related to Winona State,
the city or the area. Architects designed this 1994 addition to look like
a River paddle-wheeler.
Maxwell
Hall
Maxwell Hall formerly housed the university library.
Now, the older part of the building (left) is home to the WSU Student
Health Center, and the newer part houses the Student Fitness Center on
third floor, a state-of-the-art Teleconference and Leadership Center on
second floor, and the Maxwell Children's Center on first floor.
Phelps Hall
Phelps Hall is the oldest building on campus, constructed in 1909. It
originally housed the "Phelps Model School" at which area children took
classes from WSU faculty and WSU education students who were preparing
to become teachers. The university's Mass Communication and Psychology
departments fill most of the building, which also includes a spacious
Dance Studio, used by the Department of Theatre and Dance. The formal
Garden in front of the building was created and donated by a loyal WSU
alumnus in honor of one of his favorite professors.
Lourdes Hall
Lourdes Hall, located 1 mile west of the main campus,
is home to the WSU Residential College. Once a part of the College of
St. Teresa, this historic building offers a unique living and learning
environment. Students attend classes, dine, study and socialize in the
same building along with professors. The WSU Residential College is the
first of its kind at a public university in Minnesota.
