N672 - NURSING EDUCATION:Instruction & Evaluation Practicum

 A. Course Description
Description:
This practicum, a companion course to N671, provides the student with a guided experience in the process of teaching.  The practicum will focus on assessing learners; planning, developing, and implementing instruction; and the evaluation of learner achievement.
 Course Objectives:
 At the completion of this course the student will be able to:
 1.      Demonstrate techniques of assessment of learning needs.
2.      Select models of instruction and evaluation relevant to classroom, clinical, and practice settings.
3.      Develop classroom, clinical and practice teaching strategies compatible with program philosophy, program goals, course objectives, and learner needs.
4.      Apply knowledge of teaching and learning techniques appropriate to the setting.
5.      Apply evaluation techniques and methods to ascertain the effectiveness of teaching and learning.

 Teaching Strategies:        
 (Practicum: 60-120 contact hours. Students enrolled in the WSU Master's Program Nurse Educator focus will take 2 credits; other students with special program needs can use the variable credit option with permission of the instructor.)
 The primary teaching strategy of this practicum is supervised teaching experience in a school of nursing, health care organization staff development department, or other teaching-learning environment  The selection and coordination of learning experiences is the combined responsibility of the student, N672 instructor and is coordinated with the preceptor. A learning contract and objectives for the practicum will be developed at the beginning of this course that will guide the experiences of the individual students.

B. Rationale
 The revision of this course is primarily for the purpose dividing a 4-credit course (with 2-credit classroom and 2-redit practicum requirements) into two separate courses. This will provide increased flexibility in scheduling and offering the courses to students. In addition, it may also be a more attractive elective course for students in other nursing foci.
 There is a small revision in content from the old course that is part of the overall redistribution of content to the new course N669, and the revised course N 670.

 This change does not affect other departments, as graduate-nursing courses are open only to graduate nursing students.
