Post-Master's Nurse Educator
Certificate Program

DESIGNED FOR: Nurses who are seeking their initial Master’s of Science Degree in Nursing, with a focus of Nurse Educator.

OR

Nurses who already have a master’s degree in nursing and are seeking Post Master’s preparation as a Nurse Educator.

Winona State University has received funding for the development and implementation of a process to provide access to a distance education program for the preparation of Nurse Educators. This program is offered in partnership with Metropolitan State University, St. Paul, MN and Minnesota State University-Mankato, Mankato, MN, to access to Nurse Educator preparation across a diverse area of southern Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin and northern Iowa.

The program features:

·         Flexible program of study. Those seeking a Master’s degree may take some courses a the partner university closest to their home, some courses at the Winona State University-Rochester Center, Rochester, MN, and some courses using distance education technology. Post Master’s Certificate students can use primarily the distance education technologies and closest partner university for their program.

·         Full Time and Part Time options are available, with alternative scheduling to support working professional nurses in the evolution of their career to a master’s prepared Nurse Educator.

·         Access to Courses by Distance Learning Technology. Required courses are available by distance learning technology including Internet or Web based courses and other audio-visual/media modalities; distance preceptored clinicals; and/or transfer of credits from partner universities.

·         A history of excellence in nursing education. Winona State University, College of Nursing and Health Sciences has been offering quality Master’s education for over 15 years and remains committed to providing accessible high quality education opportunities.

The post-master’s certificate program will be primarily marketed in WSU’s service area of southern Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin and northern Iowa to advanced practice nurses (Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Midwives and Nurse Practitioners, etc.) that are interested in changing career focus to nursing education roles. The program is offered in partnership with the School of Nursing, at Metropolitan State University, St. Paul MN, and the School of Nursing at Minnesota State University-Mankato, Mankato, MN. This partnership provides access to the local contacts, practice teaching opportunities, and faculty advising and mentorship across a wide geographic area.

The post-master’s certificate program will require a minimum of the 10-credit nurse educator focus package of courses that include:

669 Nursing Education: Theory and research (3 cr.)

670 Nursing Education: Curricula and program design  (3 cr.)

671 Nursing Education: Instruction and Evaluation  (2 cr.)

672 Nursing Education: Instruction and Evaluation Practicum (1- 2 cr.)- 60-120 hrs. of practice teaching

There will be an opportunity to individualize the program based on the specific needs of the participants. For example, if an individual post-masters students needs updating in clinical content or skills, they could add courses like 502 Clinical Pharmacology, 504 Advanced Pathophyisiology, 506 Psychosocial Interventions for the Family, or the 626-27 Assessment and Intervention courses. Other graduate nursing courses could also be accessed as the student’ needs and desires may dictate.

 Other master’s prepared nurses who wish to access these courses for continuing education, and personal and professional development may also participate in the program. Nurses who do not wish to receive the certificate can take the Nurse Educator courses that interest them and best meets their individual needs.
