DEPARTMENT OF NURSING MISSION

The mission of th WSU Department of Nursing is to educate ethical, creative and responsible nurses who care for individuals, families, groups and communities in a complex global society. This mission is based on the beliefs that:

  • teaching students to care for others must take place in a caring, culturally diverse, respectful community;
  • faculty and students are accountable for maintaining ethical and professional standards;
  • learning is a lifelong, interactive, flexible process that fosters creativity, risk-taking and responsible decision-making;
  • individuals have different ways of knowing and learning about the world;
  • students will value the unique characteristics and holistic nature of people in a global society; and
  • the department must create an academic environment that fosters ongoing growth of faculty and students as learners, professional practitioners and researchers.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Department of Nursing states that:

  • Nursing is caring in the human health experience in an environment of change. Nurses collaborate with clients and other professionals and are accountable for their own judgments and actions. Nursing as a profession responds to and seeks to influence emerging health care needs in an environment of change within a complex global community. The roles of nurses change based on health care needs; such roles include provider of care, teacher, advocate, manager, leader, research participant, scholar and change agent. Education for professional nursing occurs at the baccalaureate level and for advanced practice nursing at the master’s level.
  • Each person is viewed from a holistic perspective. People grow, develop, learn and change. People have both rights and responsibilities for their health. Persons have characteristic patterns of behavior and join together or are grouped together in aggregates as families, groups and communities. A person or group becomes a client of nursing when there is an actual or perceived need for nursing.
  • Health is a dynamic human condition inclusive of wellness, illness and dying that is affected by the environment and capable of being influenced by nursing care. The goal of nursing is to enhance the client’s health and ability to care for self, to help the client develop systems of support and to maintain or alter the environment to facilitate wellness efforts and a sense of well being. Nurses as ethical decision-makers use critical thinking, communication, therapeutic interventions and technology to influence health.
  • The environment consists of interaction of multiple systems, internal and external, to persons and aggregates. Nursing is part of this environment upon providing care. Nursing, as part of health care delivery, exists within a changing practice environment.
  • Change is a natural process involving multiple systems within the internal and external environments. The "environment of change" is the presence of growth or alteration within and constant evolution in systems that impact persons and their health. Evolving health care systems are part of the environment of change in which nurses practice. Nursing inherently responds to the health needs of persons and aggregates within the environment of change.

The undergraduate and graduate curriculums are based on a common mission and philosophy. The concepts of caring, change, nursing, person, health and environment form the organizing framework for our philosophy, and give direction to our course objectives, learning experiences and program outcomes.

The "We Believe" statements associated with our department mission reflect our basic beliefs and give direction to an educational process focused on the creation of a caring and respectful learning environment; valuing diversity and the uniqueness of individuals; promoting the value of life-long learning; and facilitating a collaborative learning environment. These components are reflected in the undergraduate and graduate programs.
