TYPICAL UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM PLAN FOR 4 ACADEMIC YEARS
The following are examples of how to fit course requirements for the degree into four academic years at Winona State University. Upon admission to WSU, the student declares nursing as his/her major. A separate application to the upper-division nursing program is required. This application is due mid-semester prior to beginning nursing courses the following semester. Contact the Department of Nursing office for an application. Applications are available in August-October 1 for the spring admissions and in November-February 1 for the fall admissions. In the fall we admit 100 students to the Generic Option - 50 on the Winona campus and 50 on the Rochester campus. In the spring we admit 50 students to the Generic Option - only on the Winona campus. As of fall 2006 admission, a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 will be required for acceptance into the upper-division nursing courses but is higher as the qualified applicant pool exceeds the clinical openings in the program. At the time of application, 4 of the 5 (or 4 of the 6 depending on how you take Chemistry) prerequisite courses in the natural sciences (biology and chemistry courses) must be completed with a grade of "C" or better. It is recommended that most of the other prerequisites are completed by that time also. The natural science prerequisites are BIOL 206: Normal Nutrition or HERS 205 Nutrition for Lifetime Wellness; BIOL 209: Microbiology; BIOL 211/ 212: Anatomy & Physiology I & II; and CHEM 210: Chemistry for Health Sciences or CHEM 212/213: Principles of Chemistry I & II. The social science prerequisites are PSY 210: General Psychology; PSY 250: Developmental Psychology; SOC 150: Introduction to Sociology; and SOC 212: The Family. If you have transfer questions, you can call the WSU Admissions Office at 1-800-DIAL-WSU. You can also check on the Minnesota Course Applicability System at www.mncas.org. Through one entry, a potential transfer student has direct access to course acceptability, equivalency and applicability among participating institutions across the United States, enabling students to immediately see how their courses fulfill degree requirements at the desired college or university. Click on guest log in, course equivalency guide, and type Winona State University as the university to transfer to and type in the school you are transferring from. It's an easy and efficient way to check if your credits will transfer. All these listed natural and social science prerequisite courses (or their equivalents) plus English 111 (or its equivalent) must be completed with a grade of "C" or better before beginning the required upper-division nursing program course work. STAT 110 Fundamentals of Statistics (or its equivalent) must be completed with a "C" or better before enrolling in N375 Nursing Research, Theory and Technology. Five semester credits of upper-division electives (300-400 level courses) are required for the nursing major; at least 2 semester credits of these must be nursing electives. Prerequisite courses could be taken in several general sequences that are tied to whether the Chemistry or Microbiology or the Anatomy & Physiology courses are taken first. Other coursework can be adjusted in these sequences as long as prerequisites are completed in the necessary, timely sequence. Transfer student situations are looked at individually.
