Alumni Survey Question 3
If you were advising undergraduate students who plan to pursue a graduate degree in political science or public administration what courses or classes would you recommend that they take?

ID# Responses
It seems that no matter what level of government one works in, a good understanding of public finance and budgeting is needed. Good written and oral communication skills is essential. It is helpful to know some of the aspects of human resource management. It is invaluable for a graduate to have a basic understanding of computers and the windows environment. Knowing several software programs such as Lotus 1-2-3 or WordPerfect is critical.
English (Writing)
Political Theory, Business Law, Constitutional Law & Administrative Law. Any and all econ classes.
I don’t know; my graduate studies were not in political science.

Financial investments for public sector (i.e. bonds, grants, low interest public loans….)

Grant writing

City planning (Growth management)

I did not attend graduate study, but believe any kind of "analysis" classes get your mind thinking on the right track for politics/political science.
Writing courses. For poly-sci, more theory based courses.
Computer science, Business law.
Business Courses!
All of the law classes (i.e. Con. Law, etc.) Get a specialized minor unrelated to liberal arts (i.e. business admin.) for which to utilize your education.
Policy analysis, collaborative decision making, conflict resolution.
It’s been too long.
Added business courses.
I would recommend: 1) International courses. 2) Governmentally based courses.
Computer software programs (knowledge of). Classes in stock market. Classes in psychology/business psychology. Classes (advanced) in AM. Political institutions.
Public policy and public Adm. Political analysis. Political Philosophy. International Politics.
Internships/Independent study programs
I can’t help on this question.
1) International systems 2) Public administration work/ study program
Area of personal interest.
The classes that helped me the most were: 1. Political Research. 2. Administrative Law. 3. Political Analysis. 4. Constitutional Law. 5. Public Administration. I would like to see more economics and business courses combined with there degrees.
1. Take internships- 2. Political Science students need to learn to be "player" in process- not just observers.
Finance, Computers, Language (foreign) in addition to major courses.
First, I would make certain they understand the limitations on earning a living with such a degree. Second, I would STRONGLY recommend as much research (which requires extensive reading) and the preparation of papers (which will develop thought processes and writing skills). I would emphasis any course that might fine tune analytical skills, including logic and statistics.
Change your major!
Most of the core curriculum classes currently offered and the following: city/county government, budgeting, policy analysis.
Learn how to communicate.
Take clerical courses and courses related to getting your first job in public sector. Learn how to take tests required for entry level positions.
Courses which place a heavy emphasis on writing and analytical skills
Any and all that they could squeeze in.
Communications- verbal/written. Philosophy/logic. Accounting (broad based liberal arts education.
Research courses and writing courses.
Computer Classes/ Management/ Spanish! (especially if plan to live in Southern USA)/ Statistics.
I am not sure what courses are presently being offered, but state and local government and Constitutional law would be good choices for a public administration student.
Computer Science
Budgeting, communication classes (i.e. speaking, writing.) Classes which pertain to government. Try to stay away from all the sociology classes. Stick to specifics!!
Constitutional Law. Political Psychology. American Nat’l Gov’t. Municipal administration.
Take political science classes that provide opportunities to write. Try your best to constantly improve your writing skills. Writing in law school is absolutely essential for anything, be it a test or short quiz.
