Learning Beyond the Classroom

To prepare our students for improving our world, we connect learning, while it is happening, to the real world.  Through civic-engagement, travel-studies, service-learning, student research experiences and more, students at Winona State University have the chance to work on authentic and relevant problems as part of their academic experiences. Students develop self-confidence and leadership skills and learn that they can strengthen their communities and make a difference. in the world.

Spruce Up Winona

Once a year, WSU students and staff participate in a day to "Spruce Up Winona." Student clubs and department groups join forces to help area residents and non-profit organizations to do some spring cleaning. Past projects have included decorating the window of the Winona Volunteers Clothes Shop, clearing the yard for elderly residents and removing trash from Garvin Heights park up on the bluff. .

Mississippi River Studies

Winona State University's Center for Mississippi River Studies is dedicated to creating greater understanding of the broad multi-faceted nature of the Mississippi River and the people and places it touches. We seek greater knowledge of the history, environment, literature, natural and social sciences, folklore, visual and performing arts and economics of the Mississippi River through research, teaching and outreach. Our goal is to create knowledge of the river and to enhance our relationship to it.
