Darrell W. Krueger

1989-2005

Dr. Darrell W. Krueger became the 13th president of Winona State University in 1989 and was nationally recognized for his work in outcomes assessment.

Under his leadership, Winona State University became one of the most technologically advanced universities in the nation with one of the largest laptop university programs supporting more than 8,000 laptop computers across campus.

The Winona State University campus underwent an amazing transformation through Krueger's vision and a comprehensive campus master plan that included enhancement of campus green spaces, a new library that opened in 1999 and a state-of-the-art science laboratory center that was dedicated in fall 2004.

Krueger came to Winona from Truman State University (Kirksville, Missouri) where he was vice president for academic affairs and dean of instruction for 16 years. Krueger graduated summa cum laude as co-valedictorian from Southern Utah State College in Cedar City in 1967, with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and history. He earned a master's degree in 1969 and a Ph.D. degree in 1971 from the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Under Krueger's leadership, in 2003 the campus community began to envision a "new university" that would be more responsive to student needs and that would remain vital and effective for students and society in today's global economy and well into the future. Named "the Winona Experience," the program begins in fall 2005 with a focus on experiential learning outside the classroom, enhanced student work opportunities, and faculty mentoring of students from the very beginning of their academic career. The program is in line with WSU's mission as "a community of learners dedicated to improving our world."
