FALL 2009 COMMENCEMENT INFORMATION
The 2009 Fall Commencement will be held on Friday, December 11th at 10:30 a.m. in Memorial Hall’s McCown Gymnasium. The information in this memorandum is intended to help you organize your participation in graduation so that this day will be one of the happiest and most exciting days of your life.
PARTICIPATION in Commencement is expected of all 2009 Fall Semester graduates. If you are unable to participate in Commencement, please notify the Registrar’s Office by November 13th. Notification may be made by mail (Register’s Office PO Box 5838 Winona MN 55987), phone (507-457-5036), email (ktibor@winona.edu), or fax (507-457-5578). A list of Commencement participants will be posted on the bulletin board in the Warrior Hub, Second Floor Maxwell the second week of November, it will also be posted on the Registrar’s website http://www.winona.edu/registrar. A copy of this list will be posted at the WSU Rochester Center. If there are any corrections to be made on this list, please notify Kristine (ktibor@winona.edu ) by November 20th to assure that the Commencement program will be correct.
REHEARSAL will be held on Thursday, December 10th. Row numbers will be posted on the walls inside all the doors on first floor of Somsen Hall. Find your row number, then line up on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Somsen Hall. The row signs will be on the walls on 2nd and 3rd floor. Please be in line by 10:15 a.m. Your presence at the rehearsal is important to ensure a smooth ceremony. If you cannot attend the rehearsal for some extenuating circumstance, please arrange for a graduating friend to relay specific instructions to you.
COMMENCEMENT LINE UP for the processional will also be held on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Somsen Hall. It is extremely important that you be in line by 9:45 a.m. on December 11th. Row numbers will be posted on the walls inside all the doors on first floor of Somsen Hall. Find your row number, and then line up on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Somsen Hall. The row signs will be posted on the walls for you to find your row. A printed Commencement program will be placed on your chair in McCown Gymnasium.
CAPS, GOWNS, AND TASSELS will be available at the Grad Finale on November 13, 2009. They will also be available on the WSU Bookstore website http://www.winona.edu/bookstore , and from the WSU Bookstore beginning November 23rd. The Bookstore is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
In order to purchase the correct tassel, you will need to know the degree you will be receiving - Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Masters degree. If you are unsure of your degree, please check the Commencement list posted at the Warrior Hub.
GRAD FINALE is a special event for graduating seniors. It will be held in the Purple Rooms, Kryzsko Commons on Friday, November 13th from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Commencement merchandise, including gowns and graduation announcements, will be available for purchase at this event. The Bookstore will send out information regarding this event. For additional information, contact Deb Pelowski at (507) 457-5673 or check the WSU bookstore web site at www.wsubookstore.com.
HONOR CORDS for honor graduates may be picked up at following locations:
- at the Grad Finale, November 13th, 2009
- at the Warrior Hub, Maxwell 209 on or after December 7th.
- at the Warrior Hub, Maxwell 209 Rehearsal Day, December 10th.
There is no charge for the honor cords.
SEATING OF THE CANDIDATES for associate and bachelor degrees will be alphabetical by name, within college and degree group. Candidates for graduation will proceed after the stage party and be followed by the faculty.
If you are a graduate that will be using a wheelchair or crutches you need to inform the Registrar’s Office or Kristine at (507) 457-5036 or ktibor@winona.edu PRIOR to November 19th. Special arrangements will be made for the lineup, seating and commencing across stage.
CONFERRING OF DEGREES will be done by degree group. You will be asked to stand for this event.
PHOTOGRAPHSof each graduate being congratulated by President Ramaley after receiving her/his diploma cover will be taken by Herff Jones Photography. You will receive one free full-colored photograph with a cover letter from the Alumni Society. You may order additional copies of this photo by using the form which will be inserted in your printed Commencement program. (Notice the deadline date for ordering additional photos). There will be plenty of opportunities for picture taking during the reception immediately following the ceremony. RECESSIONAL will follow the Commencement program. Graduates will exit following the stage party and faculty. Guests are asked to wait until ALL graduates have left the hall before exiting. Please plan to meet your guests in Talbot Gymnasium or another pre-arranged site.
RECEPTION will be held in Memorial Hall’s Talbot Gymnasium following the commencement exercises. You and your guests are invited to attend.
DIPLOMASfor students completing all coursework at the end of Fall Semester will be mailed to the permanent address listed on your graduation application. Please keep the Registrar’s Office informed of changes to your diploma address.
SPECIAL SEATING arrangements may be made for guests with a physical disability or those in need of a sign language interpreter. Please contact Jackie Lettner or Kristine Tibor in the Registrar’s Office, (507-457-2800) Maxwell 209 no later than December 3rd.

Senior Citizen Seating will be available in a specified section located on the main floor. Reservations are not needed for this area.
GUEST INFORMATION
Doors open 1 hour prior to the ceremony. There are NO tickets for this event. If seating on the bleachers would be uncomfortable, it is possible for friends and family to view the ceremony from the Recital Hall (154) in the Performing Arts Center. Food, beverages and balloons WILL NOT BE ALLOWED in McCown Gymnasium or the Performing Arts Center during the Commencement ceremony.
COATS/JACKETS may be put in Somsen Auditorium during the Commencement ceremony. Please do not leave valuables.
PARKING lots on campus will be open at no charge for guests on the day of the ceremony. Handicapped spots will be available.
TELEVISED COMMENCEMENT ceremony will be broadcast by HBC in Rochester on Channel 2 and in Winona on Channel 20. The ceremony will be retelecast at a later date. The dates and times will be announced at rehearsal.
