Mississippi River
The Mississippi River influences all it touches.  Throughout history and in the modern era this river continues to be a driving force in our society.  This living and learning community will explore this rich, multi-faceted part of the American fabric. 

All students choosing this topic will be required to take the 1 semester hour course .            

 

RESC 201 Residential College Seminar:  Mississippi River (1 S.H.) 
This course is designed to explore the connections between various disciplines through activities outside of class and discussion.  This section will include assignments based on the topic of the Mississippi River.  This class partially satisfies the 128 semester hour requirement for graduation.

 

In addition to RESC 201, please sign up for at least one more course from the list below.

SOC 216 - Social Problems: The Mississippi River (3 S.H.)
The nature, characteristics and proposed solutions for selected social problems.  Grade only. Offered each semester. Assignments and discussion in this section will focus on the topic of the Mississippi River.  This class partially satisfies the WSU University Studies Social Science requirement

 

HIST 214 - The Mississippi River in U.S. History (3 S.H.)
A survey of the significance of the Mississippi River in U.S. history. The course emphasizes the role of the river in the Native-American life and early European exploration of the mid-west, and the efforts of European powers and the newly created U.S. to control the river. The course also studies the role of the river in economic change, slavery, pre-Civil War immigration, and federal policy. The course will also consider the western theater of the Civil War; the post-war bridging of the river and industrial development along it; and its 20th-century flooding, damming, and related controversies.  Grade only. This class partially satisfies the WSU University Studies Humanities requirement.
