Rochester Elementary Education
This Elementary Education program is newly (re)designed. Today's 21st century learners inspired us to rethink how teachers are prepared. The program focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), Ethnographers of Language, Global Studies, and Action Research. Along with these semester themes, there is a sustained focus on Culture & Student Learning, Clinical Practice, and becoming Data-wise.
Many of the courses in this exciting program take place at Riverside Central Elementary School. This unique opportunity gives students the chance to spend more than 60 hours each semester working directly with elementary students. Sara Lopez, a teacher at Riverside, offers the following description of this valued partnership: "The partnership we share with WSU-R offers our teachers and staff an opportunity to hone their own skills as mentors and innovators as they work side-by-side with WSU-R pre-service teachers. Our students enjoy the added relationships, energy, and excitement as pre-service teachers practice their teaching skills within our building. This collaboration truly is the cutting edge of teacher training."

The Program Integration Chart (PDF) illustrates for students both the two year option and the three year option. Students completing the program in two years will attend school full-time (taking 15 credits each semester). Students completing the program over the course of three years will take approximately 10 credits each semester; this option might be preferable to students who are juggling school with other commitments such as work and/or family.
