WSU Ranks in Top 50 in U.S.News & World Report

Winona State University is ranked among the top 50 public and private universities in the Midwest by U.S.News & World Report in its "America's Best Colleges 2010.”

WSU ranks 47th in the category of "Best Universities--Master's” in the 2010 list, up from number 51 last year. In addition, WSU retained its rank as the 13th public institution on the list.

Within the category 71 colleges and universities are listed as top tier institutions in the Midwest region. Of those, only seven schools are located in Minnesota, and only three are public institutions (WSU, University of Minnesota-Duluth and Bemidji State University).

U.S.News & World Report ranks 1,400 colleges nationwide, including 572 schools in the master's universities category. Ranking categories are based on institutional mission, such as research university or liberal arts college, and their region.

Data is collected from each school related to academic excellence. The indicators used to capture academic quality fall into seven categories: assessment by administrators at peer institutions, retention of students, faculty resources, student academic preparedness, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving rate. Each indicator is assigned a weight, expressed as a percentage, based on the judgments of U.S.News & World Report about which measures of quality matter most. The colleges are then ranked based on their average weighted score.
