Elementary Education
WSU-Rochester Center offers the Elementary Education Teacher Education Major with two options:
K-6 with Middle School Social Studies 5-8 Speciality K-6 with Middle School Communication Arts & Literature 5-8 Speciality
Through the 2+2 Program, student's can complete this Bachelor of Science teaching degree in its entirety at Rochester by completing lower division credits at Rochester Community and Technical College and the major's upper division credits at WSU-RC. By completing this degree program, students are eligible for teacher licensure by the State of Minnesota.
The Education Department integrates into this teacher education program the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to be an effective educator. This includes a philosophy of education, knowledge of the individual learner, understanding of the opportunities, objectives and responsibilities of schooling in a democratic society, practice toward teaching effectively and the professionalism to work with others in promoting continual improvement of schools.
Admission Requirements
I. Attend the mandatory Admissions Meeting as posted by the Education Department. An admission meeting is scheduled each semester. II. Submit Admission Folder (distributed at the Admissions Meeting) to the Education Department containing: A. Completed application form to the Education Department B. Student issued transcripts from all institutions attended with the following data highlighted: 1. Completion of at least 30 semester hours of credit 2. Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 or better 3. Grade of "B" or better in ENG 111 or the transfer equivalent 4. Grade of "C" or better in MATH 100 or higher, or the transfer equivalent 5. Grade of "B" or better in CMST 191 or the transfer equivalent C. Photocopy of score report from the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) for sections of Math, Reading, and Writing. D. Photocopy of notification letter of having passed the Education Department Writing clearance E. Transfer students must include a copy of their completed Credit Evaluation form prepared by the WSU Admission's Office. III. Request official transcript(s) from all institutions attended including Winona State University to be sent to the Education Department. (The request of Official Transcript form will be distributed at the Admission's Meeting) IV. Maintain a record of good citizenship.
Additional Information for WSU-Rochester Center Elementary Education ˇ The Elementary Education major is offered as an evening program (most classes beginning at 5pm) to facilitate our working students. ˇ The program is supported by Rochester residential faculty who will advise and direct students. ˇ Students may choose a two or three year completion schedule. ˇ Classes have staggered start dates throughout the semester to enable students to complete more classes within each term.
